I'm looking at getting a handheld for the first time, and ive been looking at the Dell Axim50 series. Whats the difference in functionality between windows pocket and palm os? I mean in terms of which is better and which do you guys recommend. Im looking for one that has wi fi and bluetooth and is a decent performer. Any suggestions?

RE: Pocket PC vs Palm

The biggest difference is that Palms (for the most part) don't have built-in WiFI...you have to purchase an SD/CF Wifi card, which increases the cost and fills the card slot. The mid and high-end Pocket PCs, however, usually do have integrated WiFi.

The Palm OS sports its easy-to-use interface (good for any newcommer), but lacks some advanced options. WM, on the other hand, has the familiar Windows interface, and offers power users a reason to drool. Also, most common programs (including MS Office support) are available in both Palm and WM flavors, although PocketPCs have the leg up...greater selection and more powerful software.

It really depends on what you are using it for. If you are looking for basic features and ease of use, the Palm will suit you well. However, if you want high performance for programs, games, and video, and eventually become a power-craving geek like some of us, a PocketPC is your best bet.

Hope this helps,
John

P.S. If you decide on a Pocket PC, you may want to check out some of the other threads in this forum, and the internet, concerning the next version of Windows Mobile. It will offer advanced features in Word and Excel, and finally a view-only version of Powerpoint, as well as enhanced system performance. It has already been released and should be shipping next month. If you wait, it will be preinstalled, but if you purchase your PDA now you'll have to pay for the upgrade ($30-$50) in a month or so.

Pocket PC wins over Palm OS

Pocket PC would definitely be my recommendation. But in computers and music, I've noticed that people have preset ideas and nothing will change them.
Why pocket pc? It works well with my computer which has a MS Windows OS.
It has bluetooth; I have a keyboard that I just bought recently from HP. Much more portable than a laptop.
I don't have WiFI. I didn't need it and didn't want to spend extra money. It does synch with my inbox; so I can read messages while away.
Mine has NEVO which is a remote control device which is great when my kids hide/lose the TV remote.

If you want a wifi, you definitely going to need a pocket pc. Most of palm device has no wifi, but you can sacrifice your sd card slot (the only expansion slot on most palm device) and buy a rediculously expensive sd wifi card to enable wifi function on palm. Even the most expensive palm device, Tungsten T5 doent have wifi so Pocket pc is the only choice. I recommand dell x50v. Its got VGA desplay which is 640*480 resolution and a Geforce video card( yes! a geforce video card) build-in and it also has two expansion slots, SD and CF. The only thing that it does not have is a cameralol.
