PNY 7600 GS Running Hot?

Jul 4, 2006 11:48AM PDT

Good day,
I have an eMachines T6524 AMD Athlon 64 3500+ 2.2GHz / 1GB DDR / 200GB HDD/ Integrated ATI Radeon Xpress 200 /Windows XP Media Center 2005. I have added the following An Xtra 1 Gig of DDR ram and the PNY Geforce 7600 GS graphics card. I've checked the temp on the 7600 GS while I was playing FEAR and I've seen the temp go all the way to 101 C.The default Core slowdown threshold is 125 C. Do I have anything to worry about? Thanks

Yes; that is a high temperature

How many fans are in the case? Is there a big mess of wires that's blocking the airflow to the video card? What kind of temperatures is the CPU running at? You might want to put the computer in a different case which is bigger and has better airflow, or at least start by sorting out the mess of wires.

Thanks for your reply,
I checked all the wiring and it all seems to be tied neatly and placed . There are what seems to be a fan blowing air out, one drawing air in, one fan on what I'm guessing is the AMD and a small fan on the PNY 7600gs. Other than replacing the case I'm not sure what else I can do. The temp is around 82c 83c when not engaged in playing games.

Thanks

What to do
Jul 5, 2006 7:25AM PDT

Buy some Arctic Silver 5. Take off the cooler of the video card. There should be some white reisude left on the memory and the core. Clean it off with some isoproyl alcohol. Then apply a small amount of Arctic Silver (about the size of 1/2 a grain of rice) onto the core and memory chips, and put the cooler back on. If this doesn't work, RMA the card and get one made by a different manufacturer.

Is your CPU fan working properly?
Where do you keep your tower? It should never be in an enclosure.
Before you start modifying the video card - be sure - try another card in it and recheck the temperature.
If it's under warranty, call AHPOOH.

Running Hot

Good Day,
I took the PNY 7600 GS back to the store and exchanged it for another PNY 7600 GS. I took out my modem and moved the sound card down. There are two slots open between the sound card and the 7600. The temp is now running about 76c, so I have dropped the temp somewhat either from the new card or the space I created between the sound card and graphics card. I played FEAR for approximately 30 minutes and checked the temp it was at 82c and dropping as I watched it for a few minutes. All fans seem to be working properly (As I was checking the BIOS at start up it looks like you can reset the fan speed not sure if I should attempt this) My system is in an open area so it gets plenty of circulating air. So I'm not sure what the average temp is for 7600gs.

Thanks

PNY 7600GS video card running HOT
Jul 7, 2006 4:03AM PDT

Thanks for your reply,
After talking to both Emachine and PNY it was in my best interest to take it back cause I wasn't getting any corrective answers from either one. I've been looking at Newegg and Zipzoomfly and found ASUS and EVGA 512 mb 7600gs for about the same price if not lower. I'm not sure what the rating differeance is between the GS and the GT. As I was wonderning thru the web today it seems that alot of cards run close to the temps I was getting. I also looked at BIOSTAR 7600 GS 512MB at Newegg for $139.99 less $15.00 mail in rebate (124.99 + tax/shipping. I'm just hope that I don't experiance the heat issues. I'm not sure if the PNY was bumping heads with the onboard graphics card to cause the heat issues. So it may have been my fault not installing and unstalling the old graphics bios. AS a matter of fact I'm sure of not knowing what a bios is and how to change it. Thanks for your reply I've seen your name on other issues other than mine.

Gotta Get a new card
Jul 7, 2006 7:19AM PDT

Thanks for your input,
Is there a real big gain from a 512MB vs a 256MB? I have two gigs of ram I'm sure it's more than I need. Other than a 512 looking fat will I gain any performance? is it worth the xtra $$$? Well I'm looking forward to my new card. I'm sure I'll be back on bugging you all. You all have a great weekend and I'll see you in the forum.

Thanks,
Dennis
