PN50C450B1D Firmware Update Disaster

Feb 15, 2011 6:35AM PST

So I just bought my 50C450B1D yesterday and I was amazed. My friend has the same TV and he told me I should upgrade the firmware. I went to Samsung's website and Downloaded the 1008 Firmware. After installing the Firmware onto the TV, my colors are disasterous. I have blue and green blothches all over the screen. Also i see "red snow" I believe it is called where reds are filled with black pixels. I am positive I downloaded the correct Firmware for my Model Number. I called Samsung and they are sending a local tech. I called the tech to see if they was anything I could do myself as I am an IT Specialist and I am pretty technically inclined. He asked why I upgraded the Firmware on a brand new TV... I thought to myself, I guess I would like to have the latest software available... That makes since to me. Anyways, He said that I have fried my main board! Anyone ever had this Problem? I would love to revert back to 1007 Firmware where my TV looked great. I wish I wouldnt have messed with it on my first night of having the TV... Ugg, very frustrating.

I'd be eternally grateful if someone could email me the 1008.3 firmware too.

Thanks, Melissa

Did you ever get this fixed?
Apr 13, 2013 6:55AM PDT

I'm having the same problem and have been waiting for two weeks for my "new firmware" 1008.3. Did you ever get it, and did it solve the bad firmware problem? I'm surprised no one has opened a class action lawsuit against samsung for this. I've had to call now six times and still haven't received anything in the mail from them. Not sure how they can act dumb when there's documentation all over the internet.

Same issue with firmware update 1008.2
Aug 27, 2012 1:11AM PDT

The same thing happened to me on the exact same model. When I goggled the issue online it seems to be a very common problem. The firmware I installed was to fix a red dot issue, which I had. It was not very noticeable and very sporadic that I didn't think much of if until the firmware came out. Then immediately after the update, I have green and yellow snow permanently on the bottom left side of the screen. It is obvious that it was from the update and I see so many people with the exact same issue.

The only down side to it is when I called Samsung; they make it seem like they have never heard of this issue and that they are not sure what the problem could be. Don't get me wrong, they are nice and pleasant over the phone and online, but they pretend like it's an isolated incident although I have read people going through these types of problems since 2011. Its going to cost me to fix it which I do understand to a point, but at that same time is frustrating because it was their update that ruined the TV in the first place. As much as I like the TV it makes me wonder if it is worth putting money into it or using that money to invest in a new TV.

Possible Solution for this:
Dec 12, 2012 4:24AM PST

Since Samsung seems to follow this thread a bit. Let me offer a possible solution.

From what I can see, the XE signal to the "Z-sus" board is not staying high long enough during the "ramp down" signal on the "Y-sus" board. It should stay high about 30us longer and it would allow for a much better discharge (erase).

This should be able to be done in the firmware. Normally, Samsung, you do allow for a longer discharge time. Maybe this one slipped by. Please, at least give it a shot.

Thank you for any consideration.

1008.2 made screen worse...and I am out of warranty
Feb 11, 2013 5:50AM PST

Is there any new progress or update to this issue? I bought my PN50C450B1D in Oct. of 10 and did not start having the red sparkles until 2 months ago. Go figure, my factory warranty and additional 1-year warranty both expired, but I did the update and also have the constant "snow" on anything on screen that is light or bright. Also, it seems to have produced several "dead" or "inactive" pixels that were not present before the 1008.2 update.

So now I have to make a choice - do I have the service done through the "authorized" Samsung repair rep and have that cost me an arm and a leg since it is a long distance from where I live and, hopefully, get some kind of support or service OR do I take it to a local service guy and hope he can fix it? The local guy will only charge me $35 to do a bench test...

Can't really afford to spend $700+ every couple of years to replace a TV...heck, my 20-year-old CRT set still works, you'd think today's sets could last a little longer than a couple of years...
