Plz. help Sony DVD403 - Is wind noise a Deal breaker?

Dec 19, 2005 6:14AM PST

Hi everyone. I am in urgent need of your advice, whether Sony DVD403's wind noise issue really a deal breaker? I know not many poeple have posted about it, but some had to purchase an external mic for this issue. I would really appreaciate any help from owners for this Camcorder.

Thanks in advance for all useful help you guys have posted here.

Wind noise is not unusual for microphones. External mics

are usually equipped with foam shields that reduce or eliminate this noise. It looks like the mic is located on top of the camera, so it should be somewhat shielded. However, Sony is apparently trying to provide 'surround sound' which could explain its sensitivity.

Personally, I would consider attaching a shield if I found this to be a problem. More serious in my view was the reviewer comment that you can add an additional Sony branded mic to the camera. Good old Sony is being true to form. Try to force you to buy only their stuff. In addition, if you use an external mic, you usually want to use it in place of rather than in addition to the internal mic.

I wouldn't buy it based on the mic issue, but I think most consumer cameras these days do not provide for external mics. I guess most people do not have my issues with internal mics.

Wouldn't PV-GS250 be a better deal then?
Dec 20, 2005 2:24AM PST

Thanks for your reply. Actually, I was just confused between buying PV GS250 and Sony DVD 403. Keeping the issue of editing aside. I had almost finished a thesis trying to get the best Cam. I wouldn't like to put a piece of foam on 800 dollor Camcorder. And I don't wanna get that external mic too.

My question, was whether in normal situations when wind is like 5-10 mphs an hour, does it really sound like "thunder strom" when you play the recording?

Thanks for help,
Jini

I write yes.

If wind noise is there, its time to add those shaggy dog or other wind noise reduction devices.

A Very Effective Solution to the Wind Noise Problem!
Apr 20, 2009 4:34AM PDT

The problem has been solved by a U.S. company that sells microphone windscreens for small consumer level camcorders like the one you mentioned.

A Stick-On WindCutter from www.TheWindCutter.com

I hope this helps everyone who's been searching for a wind noise solution for these smaller cameras.
