plug&play WD My Book ext HD issues

Jun 27, 2006 4:07PM PDT

New to this forum, need some info for this problem.

Ok I dunno why it's not working but it's really confusing me. It worked fine when I first got it and many times after. I recently used CrapCleaner. Didn't try to access my ext HD after that. I tend to keep it unplugged when not needed for files.
Then over the weekend my BF brought over his "My Book" (same model) we plugged it in and nothing. No plug and play, nothing.

I'd searched around here and I tried some stuff. Tried the manage drives and a few other things with no luck.

Soooo I did what I figured would fix what ever I did. I reformatted and reinstalled windows. It needed it anyways. I installed all the XP updates.

However, Plug and play is still not kicking in for it! I KNOW the drive is good cause it worked over at my BF's house when plugged into his machine.

Please tell me how I can fix this. Got any ideas on what I can do to windows so it will wake the hell up and read the drive?

I'm not sure what other info I can give here for a solution.

Thank you in advanced.

The external HD works fine on another computer, but for some reason windows plug and play will not recognise it. I'm not getting any error messages. Nothing happens when it's plugged in to my computer. I hear the external drive spinning stopping spining stopping.

I have checked the device manager. I've followed the solutions given for other peoples external hard drive issues, but they are not the same as my problem, and the solutions don't seem to be doing anything for me when tried.
When I go to my computer: right click manage: disk management I don't get the wizard to add the drive. I go to add new hardware and it's not picking up on it there either.
This is a plug and play item and there is no driver I can install for it. The autorun is on the external harddrive. It's there, but I am just baffled as to what's wrong.

I don't want to do anything that could erase the drive, as I have thing on it, and the drive still works on other computers. However I want it to be able to run on my own PC.

Yes I did contact Western Digital but they just repeat what the support help files say. I don't even think they read my email.

Please some one, can you help me solve this?

The Windows install may be the big clue.

Microsoft does not fetch drivers for motherboards and more so why should USB work at all?

So little was told about the machine but your story is a repeat of many others. Maybe Microsoft needs to address making this OS easier to install?
