pls help me configure Linksys router wihtout using 192.168.1

Jan 7, 2011 11:43PM PST

hi, i've got Linksys WRT160Nv2 chained to Fios Actiontec primary router, which keeps IP of 192.168.1.1
trying to configure linksys router but invisible as factory reset gave it 192.168.1.1
can't configure without internet; can't access internet without Actiontec, as it's coax connected and linksys has no coax port.
how can i reconfigure linksys?
XP and Vista;actiontec uses wirless G which is why i'm trying to use linksys for N. maybe it's not even worth it...the wireless g works but signal not strong.
thanks pdoyle

actiontec primary router
Jan 9, 2011 3:42AM PST

it's the standard FIOS router they're installing; Model Actiontec MI424WR router.
Vista pc is hardwired ethernet to the actiontec router, as is the Linksys WRT160Nv2. I have to change the linksys' IP address as it's identical to the Actiontec, 192.168.1.1
if i ethernet connect the linksys to the pc, i cannot get the configure screen because i'll have no internet access; just get "can't connect to internet".

update on linksys
Jan 9, 2011 9:08AM PST

hi, strangely i tried to configure router without internet connection; but browser cannot display page; tried with both firefox and explorer.
did hard reset on Linksys;
tried the original cdrom install disc but that requires internet connection.

i think the upgrade attempt has broken the liksys!
strange thing, the same thing happened with my airport express last week after i updated the software as Apple advised. It never worked again.
2 routers bricking in 2 weeks...that's strange.

the linksys isn't responding...looks like it's dead.

Router Cascade - 192.168.1.1
Jan 23, 2011 12:33AM PST

Solved an identical problem by connecting the new downstream router (one of its LAN ports) to a PC (its internet port) then using the PC's browser to access the Linksys setup at 192.168.1.1.

Using that s/w, assign the new router a fixed IP that won't be used by presumed DHCP functions on the upstream router, and disable DHCP on the new router.
