Since no one has come up with an answer, I'll give it a try.
Both cameras will do a good job as the family camera.
But you are comparing two different type of cameras.
The SX280 camera will not perform well enough in low light to give satisfactory results in most cases.
If you use the manual controls you can work around many of the short comings.
But you seem to have no interest in learning how to use those controls.
The DSLR cameras can easily handle low light situations but you will need more lenses.
i.e. Action shooting in low light or indoors, requires a special lens.
To do the jobs listed, the price increase over the SX280 is quite large.
At least 5 times higher.
I have no recommendation for any camera that will meet your expectations.
We need a new camera and are trying to decide which camera type will best meet our needs. I have been looking at the Canon SX280 but my husband would prefer the Canon Rebel T4i or T5i. Here are the specs for what I want:
* Takes high quality stills (for home use - not pro)
* Captures high quality HD video (want to use instead of a camcorder)
* Minimal lag time between shots and short start up time (have to catch fast moving kids)
* Excellent zoom (for shooting plays / sporting events from the audience)
* Image Stabilization (won't be using a tripod)
* Takes great shots inside & outside in various lighting conditions
* Will likely use Auto Focus and Automatic settings most of the time.
I'm open on price - I'd prefer to keep it under $300 but would spend more for a camera that does everything I am asking for. I don't care about wi-fi, battery life/type, brand, etc. I am open to other cameras besides the ones I listed above.
I don't understand the technology enough to understand the differences in the camera types. I know dSLR's offer more manual options but I wouldn't use that or take the time to learn about it. I did read that video may be better on the dSLR but didn't follow the reasoning.
Please tell me which camera is going to best meet my needs. Thanks so much!!
