PLEASE PLEASE HELP!!!! email &sbd files problems!

by jaysmama / September 18, 2005 1:11 AM PDT

I run windowsXP home edition 2002 service pack 2 -
Dell dimension pentium 4 CPU 2.20ghz....

A few days ago - my netscape 7.2 mail went wacky...
problem 1...
My email accts were 'gone'
I set up my accts again but now I can't get mail from one of them-[my main ISP acct]even though all the acct settings are correct...[it asks for password and when I put in correct one - I get a msg saying it's not correct] ....I contacted the ISP...

my ISP told me to uninstall and reinstall netscape - which I did...
still - I couldn't access the ISP acct for mail...
[If I go directly to the ISP site - I can get the mail but I can't get it through the netscape browswer anymore]
What is wrong and how do I fix?

Problem 2....
I 'lost' all my mail also....
I searched everywhere for my emails [especially in my mail folder on hard drive but it was empty]

Quite by shear accident - I 'found' all my lost emails -
they are sbd and msf I stumbled upon by accident....

can I put them back into accts?...I understand they are archive files...
when I open the sbd files in word - the emails are there - along with all the html code...so they are very hard to read...
how can I get them back into my email folders the way they were before?

I hope these aren't stupid questions....I've searched everywhere for a solution - I'm not 'computer savy' enough to go into things like registry etc...
Is there a 'simple' solution I can do without being from tech support? I don't want to screw up my computer...
Thank You soooo much for any help you could give me!
Jaysmama

Jaysmama,

As nobody answers, I'll say something. But it won't be much help.

With Netscape's emailing unoperational let me suggest you switch to another email-client, at least temporarily. Outlook Express will do, but you can try Thunderbird (www.mozilla.org) also. Or download the full Mozilla to replace the full Netscape. Note however, that Mozilla and Thunderbird are part of the Netscape family, so whatever is wrong on your system (and not solved by reinstalling Netscape) could also affect those programs. Outlook Express will be useful at least to check the validity of your account information, including the password.

I don't know anything about Netscape mail files (sbd and msf), because I don't know anything about Netscape. But I find some reference on them with google, mainly in the context of backup/restore trouble. I get the impression it ARE your mailfolders and not just an archive, but you just don't connect to them due to profile trouble. That fits with your losing your accounts. I suggest you copy everything (but that might be too much or too little) to the appropiate place in your current profile. You might try the browser forum for more help, but Netscape knowledge is rather scarce at the moment. And you will have to provide more information then you did here, I'm afraid.

Also remember it makes sense to make a regular backup of all your private data, including email, and espeially to know how to restore it in case of problems. That might have helped in this case.

Hope this helps.

Kees

In reply to: Re: email problems

Thank you for your help - I have been able to fix the ISP email problem [#1 problem] but I still can't re-insert my email files back into my email folders....
I opened one folder through word [there were 177 pages] and deleted all the html text - leaving just the 'meat' of the emails - got it down to 43 pages and then saved it as a word doc...
I still have the files in tact saved on my hard drive- but now at least I can read the contents of the emails without all the html gibberish...
I would still like to have them back in my email folders - for it's much easier to have them listed by date/subject etc in their intended state...
If anyone out there can tell me how to get those files back into my email inbox - I'd be eternally grateful...
Thank you again for your help!:-)

Help, my PC with Windows 10 won't shut down properly

Since upgrading to Windows 10 my computer won't shut down properly. I use the menu button shutdown and the screen goes blank, but the system does not fully shut down. The only way to get it to shut down is to hold the physical power button down till it shuts down. Any suggestions?
