Please help with surge surpressor, battery backup question..

Feb 23, 2006 3:26AM PST

I have the Sony 50" SXRD tv and wanted to run the power through a battery backup in case my power went off. I wanted to just keep the fans on to cool the bulb while the TV powers down. I got a great deal on the Belkin 750VA 400 watt surge surpressor ($49.00 after rebate) and just wanted to be sure it will be large enough. If I am watching TV, my plans are that if the power goes out, i will immediately turn off the tv and let the fans run off the battery until they shut down. Will this unit work ok? (6 plugs, all 6 are on the surge surpressor, 4 also on battery backup) What do you think?

Same basic question done several times in this thread

Really, check the threads in this forum. The question has evoked much disagreement, controversy, opinions, etc. in recent months. The opinions do vary 180 degrees. My posts reflected my honest opinion as to what I did as my solution. In brief, I think supposedly decent computer surge protectors are no way sufficient for new tech TVs. They have to have been made specifically for a/v. I started out using one, called the cable company as I expected results from my big new expensive set. Cable guy quickly demonstrated by bypassing by straight lining, how much electric fuzz crap was introduced. I wound up with a $150 area Monster Cable line conditioner and consider it positively well spent insurance. Not that I don't believe in cheap computer surge protectors. One sacrificed itself to save my electronics when the power company crew crossed wires when changing out the neighborhood transformer. My neighbor had no protection, and his equipment got melted! The line conditioner video improvement is visual and obvious; audio is subtle but real.

But I am not running my video signal through that surpressor

The only thing I have plugged into this belkin surge surpressor/battery backup is the AC cord for the TV and satellite receiver. The rest of needed connections are being run through a regular A/V surge surpressor. I only wanted this 2nd surpressor to give backup power to the TV to power the cooling fan in the event of a power outage. I am on directv HD satellite.
