Clarification Request
The last HP's I've seen include recording software.

You didn't reveal why you didn't use what came with the HP. Maybe there is more to this story like this is an used laptop?

Details?

You need to explain besides trying to burn a disc, what you're burning. HP does recommend using DVD-R+ blanks as general use. Also, if you brought cheap brand, like Memorex, it's not uncommon to have issues. What if any error is displayed, post it.

Burning

My guess is that is is not the media that you are using but rather how you are going about it or what you are trying to do. Rarely have I seen media, CD'S DVD'S that did not function in many and most systems. IF it is the FULL version of a current Nero that you are using you shouldn't have a problem. IF it is the trial version, such as comes with new drives, you will not have full burning functionality with DVD media, the trial variant is basically a "CARROT" Another issue could be copyright, if you are trying to burn (copy) such as rentals, there are ways around this that require more in depth software(s) and might typically deemed not legal as in copyright infringement.
