Question

PLEASE HELP! VGA to HDMI Converter

Feb 20, 2015 1:06AM PST

Hi all, I'm new here so please excuse the newbie errors that may occur. We just recently purchased a Samsung Led TV 5003 Series for my Dad. I do not know the model number.

He has a Tosheba Laptop with a VGA port only. We then purchased a IO Crest VGA to HDMI converter.

http://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B006FILNV6/sr=8-2/qid=1423148764/ref=olp_product_details?ie=UTF8&me=&qid=1423148764&sr=8-2

It works fine, except the sound from the computer and the tv plays at the same time. When we go into the sound playback on the pc, there is only the pc speakers listed, nothing else. Is there something I should be changing in the menu of the tv? Please someone help, I really need to get this fixed for him.

Answer
VGA doesn't transmit sound, only video

That's why you would also need to attach a separate audio cable (usually, standard 3.5mm) from laptop to HDTV. But that requires the HDTV to have such audio input(s).

If you post the entire model number of the HDTV, we can help you verify this.

Converter for VGA and Audio
Feb 20, 2015 3:03AM PST

The converter that I have has an Audio cable attached to it. Have a look at the link that I attached to my first post and you will see that. But when it is plugged into the pc the sound still comes from both TV and PC.

Here is the Model Number of the Samsung Led TV 5003

UN40H5003AF
Type No. UN40H5003

Doesn't appear to be a TV issue.

It sounds to me you want to silence the PC side.

Silence PC
Feb 20, 2015 4:16AM PST

Yes, with this converter, it has the Audio Support, so it is working, yet we should only be hearing the TV, but instead we are hearing from both. I've gone into the computer and muted the speakers and then the sound from the TV also mutes, so that's no good. When going into the Sounds, playback on the pc, it only shows the computer speakers listed. So there has to be something in the TV Input that I can enable or disable.

Sorry I was unclear. The PC make/model number

And to be very clear the model series won't suffice. Some come back with the series and I'm looking at over a dozen models in that line. Here we have to be much more precise to learn if this laptop has a setting or needs to use another jack instead.

Usually these PCs will silence the speakers when a headphone is plugged in.

HOWEVER I did bump into a few Dells that didn't do that. Cause? Someone had installed a non maker supplied OS and forgot some apps.

Model No for Laptop
Feb 20, 2015 4:52AM PST

Hi Bob, the model no. I posted is for the Samsung TV we just purchased for my Dad. The toshiba laptop is an older model probably 2012 or so that he is using and I have no idea what the model number is on that. My Dad lives in another province than I do. But I'll try and get the pc model no. if you think it will help you.

Since it's not a TV setting, it will help.

Ha ha, well I'm away on the other side in Nova Scotia, and we are snow covered and then some right now! I lived in the Yukon for 5 years and never saw this much snow!

Just got off the phone from my Dad and here is what he told me.

Toshiba Model Number:
Satellite L550D-00Q

User manual for Toshiba L550D
Feb 20, 2015 5:25AM PST
http://web1.toshiba.ca/support/isg/manuals/pslxjc/L550_L550D_EnglishManual.pdf

From page 1-9:
"Headphone jack This jack lets you connect digital speakers or a
stereo headphone (16 ohm minimum). When you
connect headphones, the internal speaker is
automatically disabled."

There are no settings required. If this is not working as per the product manual the laptop has suffered a minor failure or the headphone plug you have is the wrong size.

For a test, try other headphones.

Tried that, and headset and speakers work fine.

Then it's broke.
Feb 20, 2015 5:47AM PST

The speakers should not work fine when we plug in headset or that audio jack.

At least we know where the problem is.

I mean either or, if plugged in just on their own, they work fine.

Which is incorrect.

The laptop speakers are supposed to, well, here's the text from the laptop's manual.

" When you connect headphones, the internal speaker is automatically disabled."

Since they work fine plugged in or not, the laptop is faulty. This is not a setting.

-> Can you share if some USB to HDMI would suffice? It could work around the failed laptop issue.

Or how about this to replace the laptop audio? -> http://www.amazon.ca/Syba-SD-CM-UAUD-Adapter-C-Media-Chipset/dp/B001MSS6CS/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1424472428&sr=8-1&keywords=B001MSS6CS

Rum and Coke
Feb 20, 2015 7:27AM PST

Ok, that's it, I'm into the Rum and Coke. Ya know what Bob, I think you're right. it has to be the computer. I think I'm just gonna go on to Kijiji, sort of your Craig's List if your in the states, and buy him a cheap computer with an HDMI on it, and that will solve the problem. He can keep it next to his TV and watch his shows on it and keep his Toshiba in his office. Either that, or I'm gonna be a drunk bald woman.

I want to thank you so much for your help. You truly have been a beacon of light in this storm, I really mean that. I have been all over the internet and you are the only one that really helped me. Thank you so much Bob.

Well, I'm off to shop on Kijiji, wish me luck. I'll stop by and let you know how it all goes.

All the very best to you and yours Bob.

Since Vancouver, we've been to Boston for decade but 2010 moved to better clines. Here we have a decadent rum and coke. The coke is from south of the border and is made with real sugar cane. Sadly I'm out of Pusser's Rum.

I know that setup too well. If I was shopping for a laptop I like this one http://www.amazon.com/15-6-Inch-Intel-Celeron-Laptop-500GB/dp/B00L49X8E6/ but it costs a lot more on amazon.ca. But it's more than up to the task of 1080p video playback from Hulu and more.

After all he's put me through over this situation, I'm gonna get him one for 50 bucks! Ha Ha!

But I like your way of think'n with the real Coke made with real sugar cane!! Wow, after drinking that you probably wouldn't need the rum!

All the best Bob,
