Please help select my dream computer

Jul 28, 2005 2:31AM PDT

Hello,

I want to buy a powerful dsktp publishing / video editing / gaming computer, and price is no issue.

I am mid range in comp proficiency. I want a few specific components, but I am not knowledgable enough on the rest to choose everything from the case to the motherboard, to the dimms, power supply etc.

My specifics are these...

I want an AMD Athlon 64 FX-57 for the processor. I don't even know if two of them (dual processor system) is possible or a good idea.

I want an NVIDIA GeForce 7800GTX graphics card for the video. I've read you can even get two of those. Is that right / wise?

Now as for the rest... I don't care at all about how it looks (the case, mods, etc.) I just want whatever is the max in the component area.

ram - As much of the best ram as is possible / wise

HD - tons of HD space with with the best access / read speed

CD - I'd like the best DVD-RW drive. Should I have 2 for some reason?

Modem - I use cable, so I won't need any modem. It would be cool if the motherboard had the networking card onboard.

Sound card - I have a pro sound card I use that I will be adding

A floppy drive.

Windows XP Pro

The only other thing I can think of is that I would like to have as many expansion card slots as possible.

I've been able to find a couple sites that let you choose your own components, and they build it and ship it to you... however these sites don't have the specific components I mentioned, and I have no clue what to select on all the other variables.

If there is a preconfigured computer with those specs that someone knows about, I would be very greatful. If someone would like to go down the list of component suggestions, that would be great, too.

Thanks.

Well, Bob is correct!! Now the problem, you want it this year???
"I want to buy a powerful dsktp publishing / video editing / gaming computer, "
Is this your order of proity??? What video editing software are you going to use?? What games??
The best video editting PCs are dual core processors.
The best gaming are single core processors. But all processors will do both functions.
Video editing dose not NOT require a highend video card, BUT gaming dose.
Which Pro sound card??
I know that a of us will love to help you spend your money. John

''I know that a of us will love to help you spend your money. John''

Hehehehe!!! That's what I'm counting on. Wink

I didn't know about the dual core vs single core and their suited applications.

I suppose I will need the most focus in the gaming area.

I'm not a gearhead that likes to change things out a lot. I'm really looking to drop a good chunk of dough on a machine that I won't have to worry about for a good amount of time. I want to be far ahead of the curve so that I'll still be able to at least handle the hoggiest, nastiest games a few years from now.

I've read the AMD Athlon 64 FX-57 is the best processor to get right now, and the NVIDIA GeForce 7800GTX is the best card... I just want as much of the best of everything as I can get... 2 gigs of ram I guess, whatever is the fastest HD's, and that's pretty much all I know.

I have the whatever creative audigy 2 was top of the line a couple years ago. It has about all types of connectivity there are, sounds great for games, etc. I've made plenty of recordings with it that sound great for not spending the few thousand bucks for a real pro studio grade card.

My main focus is games and music. I edit video as well, but not for any professional company... just with the low end video editing titles.

don't they always?

WOW...

close to 10 grand for that system you linked? I didn't know it could get like that for a home use computer.

There seems to always be something right around the corner though, right? What would I be waiting for? (I'm not getting a Mac)

Dual-cores. Socket M2 for AMD, and unknown yet for intel. Windows Vista. DDR3 ram? SATA II widespread. HD DVD Burner. New GFX cards.
