Please help! Need notebook tips

Jun 5, 2005 8:30AM PDT

I am going to travel soon and need a notebook. I'm a non-gamer student who just needs to type papers, surf the web. I don't want it to be heavy because I am traveling, and I am looking to spend under $700. . . I already have a desktop and I am not looking for a "lifer", I just need something that has battery life (the longer the better) and would last for 2-3 years. In help would be appreciated!

the problem with wanting a small, lightweight
portable is that the smaller and lighter they
are the more expensive they become. I was
going to mention the new DELL x1 this machine
is getting all kinds of rave reviews from my
co-workers. The X1 is actually made and rebranded
SAMSUNG so you're not getting the 'ol typical DELL
alphabet soup type of quality. But I believe
its a little more than what you wanted to spend.
Check it out at dells' site. Another option would
be to get something USED or pre-owned via ebay.
But like any auction, you roll the dice. You might
want to check out ecost.com, I remember coming
across some half decent deals on their bargains
section.

x1 runs around 1500. . .

so its a little out of my league. The reason I am so rigid about the price is that I am going to a very sketchy area and don't want to see my investment disappear

It's really amazing what you get for the under 1K US bucks now. While I can't entertain any non 64-bit capable units, there are many offers out and about here.

What are you seeing in your area?

May need bigger budget

Hi A. I just got a Fujitsu Lifebook S6231 after lots of help from this forum. It's a bit pricey for it's stock model at 1200 from Fujitsu direct but it's the BEST notebook I've ever owned and great for traveling. The only ones I found at that price are the lower entry Dell models on the front page of the dell.com site on sale, and you can also go to any one of the Best Buy/Circut City websites and check out ACER. They are well stocked and fit the description, but I don't know about reliability and customer service on them. Good luck.
