Please help me!

Hi, I recently installed a driver on my very old toshiba 4030CDT Laptop that I just recently started using again. I wanted to use DSL instead of a phone cord so I bought ( i dont know ehat there called) one of those things u slide into the side of your laptop and u can plug an ethernet cord into. I installed a driver from microsoft so it would work but now, I just get an illegal operation message eveytime I turn it on and it brings it up every 10 secs. I cannot acess the internet because it says that (I forget exactly what its called but i think its lexplore or somthing like that) it has caused an illegal operation.. So I decided to setup one of those home networks to transfer things from LAN because there are some files I need off the internet for this computer. It worked fine on my other computers and I used the XP disk like it said to set it up on my laptop that laptop im talking about (which has 9Cool but when I restarted my laptop like it says it doesnt work, I just get to my desktop but with no icons or anything, just the colour and it says Ssdpsrv has performed an illegal operation and cannot continue. So it just sits there... but its not frozen cause after my Rpcss pops up and says it has caused an illegal operation and i click ok and i closes it will keep poping up.

Also I DONT HAVE THE WIN 98 SETUP DISK AND THE BIOS ON THIS COMPUTER ARE TO "OLD" TO SETUP XP.......

PLEASE HELP ME!!
