PLEASE HELP ME!!!!

Mar 3, 2004 12:54PM PST

I just downloaded a copy of the WIN95 bootdisk, and COMPLETELY deleted my computer's partition and all its data. Now, I have a copy of XP,(Not the upgrade, the ACTUAL thing) and I wanna install it. But, whenever I go to load the setup.exe, it tells me that I can't do it in DOS. So, I go to the \i386\WINNT.EXE and it tells me that I can't do it because it didn't have a space to put a swap file or something like that.

SO, now that I know my XP disk doesn't work, I went to get my WIN98 setup CD, but I think my brother, (Who lives about 6 states away,) has my disk. IS there any way to get my XP disk to work? If I even had 95 on my computer, I can get it to work. So, is there a place where I can download 95 or 98 to a bunch of floppies?? Thanks for any and all help I get.

XP is designed to boot from the CD, not DOS. Have you tried that?

You can do either 1 of the following:

1. Put the WinXP CD into your CD ROM, change your BIOS to read the CD as first device to read then follow the messages prompt to install WinXP.

2. Go to www.boot.disk then download a Win98 boot disk, create it into a floppy disk. Change your BIOS to read the floppy as first device to read. Then at A:> prompt, change to your CD ROM drive which has been assigned by the Boot program (i.e. D:\), change to a CD folder I386, type WINNT.EXE then press "ENTER" key. Follow a prompt messages to install WinXP.

? The XP CD is bootable. Try setting the bootorder at BIOS for CD ROM to be the first.
? Is your computer XP- ready ? You can test it HERE .

Kay, thanks for all the help, but none of these methods worked. I tried booting with a Win98 boot disk, but when I loaded the WINNT.EXE, it gives me this:

An internal setup error has occured.
Could not find a place for a swap file.
Setup Cannot continue. Press ENTER to quit.

What do I do???

Try to repartition then reformat the hard disk with Win98 boot disk again.

Thanks for ALL THE HELP AGAIN!! But, I am sorry to report that not one of these methods helped. But the good news is that I no longer need anybody's help. I found my Windows 98 Setup Disk in a box of magazines, (yeah, go figure). Windows XP is now up and running perfectly. Thanks a lot again for all the help though.
