The 20x zoom part will be the hardest one to find. To reduice the cost most seem to have 10x~12x optical zoom and give you a digital zoom.
Mini Dv is still the best way to go at this time.
Read some reviews on C-Net and the link below then go to a store and get your hands on them Sony, Canon, Panasonic, JVC are the best out there for the most part.

Hi,
I have never posted to one of these but am completely overwhelmed by mixed information from stores on camcorders and am in a time crunch. I am heading out of country within 2 weeks and need to buy a camcorder ASAP. So far,I think I want:
Small as possible, quality camcorder to take on a 5 month backpacking trip
Parameters:
Ideally under $500
Want a solid brand - comfortable with Sony, Canon, Panasonic I think are good ones
Not sure between DVD or miniDV - very mixed reviews
At least 20x optical zoom
Good stabilization
Decided I don't care about still image in camcorder b/c I will bring separate camera
Overall want durable, quality, lightweight travel camcorder to take with me. I have to order this week so any specific camcorder recommendations is great - also, because on a budget, any specific deals of where to purchase too would be great! THANKS!
