Please help...admin account overwritten---windows xp pro.

Jul 31, 2007 11:08PM PDT

Hello:

I have a strange situation. I installed DB2 connect on a machine that had just 1 account (administrator). It appears that the application created its own account as computer administrator. Now at boot up I only have the option to log in with the new account. Under windows explorer I see the old "administrator" folder and associated files in documents/settings, but would REALLY like to have my desktop, settings, etc back. I'm afraid to do anything that would risk losing the original files.

I have tried system restores but it does not work.

Any ideas?

Thanks to anyone that gets me out this mess!

Now create a NEW account.

Don't use the name of the old account or of the folder name of your temporarily lost files.

Login your new account then go to those "lost" files and copy them to your new account's home directory. You will likely have to TAKE OWNERSHIP of said files.

Read http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308421

-> Remember to never use Windows NT, 2000, XP or Vista with just "one" account since it leaves you without recourse to fix what could be a simple issue.

Thanks Bob:

So that original account is history and my only option is to copy the files over? Not the best of news but I guess it is a learning experience.

Thanks!

No we are rebuilding that account.

These are called "profiles" and how we rebuild it.

Sorry, it's mildly advanced so I offered the shortest version I could.

Thank you for the report back.

The big win on this one is I bet you learned at least two new things.
