Question

Please help

Hi, i've been trying to update to windows 10 from winndows 7 for 2 days now, nothing is working. Everytime I install windows 10 using the upgrade tool I get the error code 0xc1900204. After doing some research I tried changing the ProgramFilesDir to C:\ but that didn't work, I know I have enough space and this hard drive is brand new, I have already run a disk scan. I'm getting desperate at this point. I tried using the media creation tool to upgrade and when it gets to the point where the computer needs to restart the upgrade tool just closes and nothing happens, the computer doesen't restart and i have to try installing again only to end up with the same outcome.

C:\ looks incorrect.

I will change that back but that's what it was set to the first time I failed to install windows 10.

Sometimes you inherit banged up Windows.

I can't guess why it's changed in the first place. It's unsupported and has resulted in total system meltdowns (along with the owner.)

Another error

I tried installing again and I got the part where it attempts to restart the computer but this time I got once again, another error... The code for this one was 0xc0000005.

My bet is the permissions, ownership and ACL entries are incorrect. In other words a banged up OS.

I usually start over.

Is there some reason why you don't just contact the maker and get the w10 restore media?

Seems like the easy way out.

I had a similar problem, I found a Windows 10 Upgrade Assistant. That worked great, upgrade without any more problems. Good luck.

After being completely frustrated trying do my first Windows 10 update many times over several days, I googled the problem. After trying many suggested fixes without any working, I found one that did the trick. Tweaking.com has a Windows Repair program that actually worked. http://www.tweaking.com/content/page/windows_repair_all_in_one.html. I followed their directions to the letter from step one to the last step. It was easy but takes a long time for it to finish its fixes. Hope it works for you.
