General discussion

Please forgive me...

..for not wetting my pants over an Apple boombox for an iPod. iPod fanatics may want something like this, but come on, I'm not dishing out my hard-earned cash for an Apple-endorsed overpriced iPod accessory. What else yah got, Jobs?

DVR
Feb 28, 2006 3:09AM PST

Yeah, it looks like this new Mac mini has been built to go to the next step of a Media Center. Is is simply a software issue at this point or a service issue? In other words, do we need the iTunes music store to become the TiVO like service provider? I'd expect to see that next.

I somehow can't believe...

...that Jobs would have released a Mini with frontrow and plans on giving it DVR capability without offering it on iMacs and other products. I'm willing to believe that it might be a software upgrade. What's more, I wouldn't doubt if its some sort of feature built into the next OSX version he releases. That would really send ripples through the industry, which is Jobs way anyways.

My $0.02

I think the DVR capability would be introduced first on the Mini. To me, why would you want DVR capability on a Mac that already has its own screen? Wouldn't the purpose of the Mini be for hooking up to your HDTV and recording and playing back content through it? That question made me confused when Apple introduced Front Row on the iMacs first. Personally, I wouldn't be sitting across the room from my iMac watching content, I'd be sitting across the room from my TV with my Mini hooked up to it, watching DVDs or recorded shows.

Making Decisions Like Molly
Feb 28, 2006 9:15AM PST

I see Veronica makes DVR decisions like Molly makes decisions about iPods. Wink

Not to get too far off track, but here's what I would do (and I'm a current HdTiVo owner). If you really want a DVR, go ahead and rent one from your cable company for now. When the Series 3 comes out see if you can stomach the price. I think it's worth waiting for the Series 3 even if you don't do HD because of the dual tuners.

BTW, given the problems of getting a Windows Media Server running with CableCard (because of the stupid CableCard certification process) I don't see an Apple one coming Any Time Soon (TM).

$700

You would be spending close to $1,000 for an iPod Video & the new Hi-Fi. To me, thats a little insane. Can the iPod not be hooked up to regular speakers like from Altec Lansing?
