Please advise!!

I am a physician and I mainly use my PDA for the address book and separate medical applications, like ePocrates, textbooks and various drug interaction tools. I have an old Sony Clie which only has 15 MB (probably less after you subtract installed programs) and I am running out of memory, though it still works fine (Palm OS). Not all applicaitons will run off the memory stick. I want to get a new PDA with more memory but don't need the WiFI, phone or BlueTooth. I'd also like to be able to transfer my data and programs. It seems Sony is pretty much out of the business of PDAs and I haven't heard great things about Palm's support. Any suggestions??

Thanks.

What support issue?

The most common slam are users that need help with Hotsync and complain that PalmOne charges to fix their PC.

I'll reveal that I have applications that I've written for the PalmOne PDAs and the easiest move could be to the current PalmOne offerings.

You may hear the E2 noted here and there but the battery time compared to the old E model is very nice.

Bob-

Thanks for responding to my message. I had read reviews of various Palm PDAs on CNET and the issue of poor customer support was often mentioned. I am glad to hear otherwise. Is there a particular model you recommend, given I want mostly a capacious memory, reliability and don't need either a phone or WiFi. I thought to remain with a Palm OS so I could transfer files from my Clie to the new PDA. Do you know whether that is even possible?

Try Palmone.com

It lists the current models. My software is only fielded on the units with a serial port so I have never played with the Zire 31 or such models. I've used most of the other models during testing and have about 6 (or more?) around my office at the moment.

Your files should slide right over.

To help with the move, may I suggest a memory card reader so you can copy from your Sony memory stick to your new SD Card.

I did run into a few of my older applications (I have them but was not the authoer) that didn't work on my new T|X but they were things I had just sitting there and was not using.

The important thing to remember when buying or upgrading to a new PDA is that it's never going to be like your previous one. Not that it's a bad thing. But, you have to get used to the idea that it not the same.

Next, take into consideration what you will use your PDA for. I happen to work for a medical reference company (Lexi-Comp) and I know that your epocrates will operate on the memory card. As will our software, but that's not the point. If all you will be using is the Medical software and contact, calendar, etc... the lower end models will be more than enough for what you need. Just make sure it has the expansion slot.

A side note: any software that is not compatible with your new PDA will automatically be removed from your backup folder when you install the CD for the new PDA. This will give you a pretty clear cut answer whether or not the software is going to work. Most companies will offer you a newer version to download in that situation. Let me know if you have any questions.

Brandon,

Thanks for the advice. Part of the reason why I wanted to get a new PDA was to be able to install new medical applications. I wasn't aware that ePocrates (Clinical Essentials) could work off the Memory Stick, as there is a little lock next to most of the component programs in the list of programs in the PDA's internal memory using MS Gate). I assumed that meant it could not be moved to the memory stick. IF that isn't true, I might not even need to get a new PDA. I am perfectly happy with the Clie, except for the tiny memory.

There is a drug interaction tool, lexi-something. Is that your company's? I got iFacts from Skyscape but was thinking of investing in another program as ePocrates' while improved is not 100% and iFacts only includes interactions for which there is published data and only updates quarterly (a real disadvantage). If that program is your compnay's, would you tell me about it?

Thanks.
