PlayStation 3 vs Xbox 360

Aug 20, 2009 12:27AM PDT

I am relatively new to the gaming world. I own a Wii, and that was my first real gaming machine. By now, I am thinking about getting another device. Now that the PS3 is "slim" and a lot cheaper, I see it as a good value. I hear that Xbox 360 price cuts are on the horizon, though. I am in no hurry to purchase, though would like to have a new one by Christmas. I am really torn on this one. So many people have online 360 accounts in my town, but PS3 looks like it has more features for the price. I also won't have to pay extra for WiFi, and subscription. Though paying a game price for Xbox Live doesn't sound too bad for me. I know the Xbox Live experience is much better than Playstation network, but I just am not sure. Help please!

Pick the game before the machine.

Since the game title you want to play may only be on one but not the other the only reason I might give the PS3 a nod today is the recent price cut but it is probably the best blu ray player you can get today. Don't listen to the naysayers it wears out the drive. It may but you have your warranty plus Sony has a flat rate repair rate that includes shipping. It's very quick too. Juse 7 days total last time.

Like Bob said, the GAMES should dictate the console, not the other way around.

Hit some review sites, and look at the different titles that seem interesting to you. Pick the console that has the largest number of titles that YOU want to play. Don't worry about anything else, because it will all follow after you choose a console.

Thankyou both. I think I will go with the PS3 because I see it as a better value, and has most of the same games as the 360.

if this was earlier i would have recomended a 360 because of the price difference but now days the bas model ps3 sells for around $300 so unless you dirt poor you can get one. but all three of the current gen consoles had problems
-360 (red ring of death)
-ps3 (not enough games and pricey as hell)
-wii (the motion sensor had a delay but it has been fixed now and if you get wii resort i think its called then you can get one for one motion)
basically as i and many others have said before this gen is a gen for the user were you can pick which one suits you i went with a second gen 360 because i don't like the controlers for ps3 and i only have a small tv. but if i had a bigger tv i would have gone with ps3 for the graphics and i guess i would just put up with ****** controls... sorry if you like the controls but i don't

Well...

I mean I like the xbox 360, but I have no interest in dealing with the rrod, the scratched discs, or any of that. I also don't want to pay $100 for a stupid WiFi adapter. If all of the problems were addressed, then I would totally be more apt to buy one. Hopefully the 360 will see price cuts soon like everyone is talking about, and hopefully some of these updates. I also want to see a new prizefight for the 360 and ps3 slim. Thanks for all the help again.

360 zero issues here.
Aug 20, 2009 11:50PM PDT

I did my homework and learned about the newer models which means I don't have the old chipsets with trouble. Not a single scratched game disk since it's bolted done so the kids can't kick it over.

My observations is that most of the troubles were with old chipsets and sometimes the owners (they would never fess up to the unit falling over.)

But besides all that, even the PS3 has had issues. No unit is perfect but let's bottomline this.

"We're renting the hardware."

I've had issues
Aug 21, 2009 12:03AM PDT

I've had issues with the newer "Falcon" revision 360s. No RRoD or scratched game discs, or even the issue with the horizontal scan lines from a fried video chip that never got much press.

What I have had is several units suffer from a failing optical drive.

First unit lasted about 8-9 months before starting to have problems, so I sent it in for repairs. They send me a replacement unit. Within 72 hours, that one suffered the same fate. So away it went. Replacement #3 so far seems to be working pretty well. It occasionally doesn't read a disc the first time I put it in, but the majority of the time it does. So I'll be keeping an eye on it as my warranty period starts winding down.

So, it would appear one of the 3-4 companies that has made optical drives for the 360 produced a bad batch, or Microsoft just didn't pay them well enough to make a quality product.

I'm not sure I believe the claims that 54% of 360s are defective, but I would certainly believe claims of around 33%. You've had the RRoD, scratched discs, overheating GPUs, and the issue with the optical disc crapping out is another "unsung hero" of sorts. That many distinct issues does not make it hard to believe there is a high failure rate on the 360. Granted the PS3 isn't perfect, nor is the Wii. I think the PS3 is estimated to have around 17% failure rates, and the Wii is around 7%. Higher than zero, but the odds are quite a bit better than the 360. More like 1 in 5 for the PS3 will be bad, and 1 in 10 for the Wii, as opposed to 1 in 3 or possibly even 1 in every 2 for the 360.

yah

Yah. I wonder if the PS3 is going to become more popular with its lower price. Xbox 360 is so good because of its online, and so many people have one around my area. We'll see.

Well, I have not completely decided yet, but I am pretty sure that I will get the PS3 slim. It really is a great deal for the price. Thanks for all the help. On an off topic question, how come my name appears as weirdkid. thats not even my user name. anyone know why? thanks
