Playing Videos = Error

Jul 2, 2007 5:35AM PDT

Hi,

I have a Dell 4600 Dimension PC. The computer itself is at least maybe 3 - 3 1/2 years old. Just recently, I reinstalled windows after having a few issues that I needed to fix.

Specs:
P III
2.8 Ghz
512 megs
120g HD
128mb Radeon 9800 video card
Creative Audigy 2 sound card

So my issues is this, anytime I try and watch a download movie, clip ... I get a system error. You know, the basic 'Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.' I just have to click on it once to get the error.

I was thinking maybe a virus on my computer, OR a virus on the video itself but any video does the same thing. When I get the error, I have to Ctrl+Alt+Del to shut down the folder ... and in the process window I can see a few programs of Dr.Watson running. Could this be the issue?

I'm really desperate to fix this issue ... I hope you guys can lend me a hand on trying to resolve this.

I uploaded a few pics ...

Question..

When you reloaded XP, is it with SP2? Also, did you get all the updates and patches from the Microsoft Update site?

Your uploading should not be an issue, if it was downloaded then maybe.

Again

Yea, it's SP2 with all the necessary updates ... the movies are downloaded too, but any virus checker doesn't find any virus. It's ANY video I download ... so I need more help with this.

video player are you using? Have you tried a different video player? Are the movies being played paid for? What site did they come from? Let us know.

Hey

I've tried numerous players, Winamp, Media Player, VLC, DIVX ... all with the same error.

No, most of these videos are downloaded either by some torrent website or a site like youtube. There is no virus on any of these videos, I'm positive of that.

Now I think..

we are getting into some copyright issues. Forum policies prohibit help of this type and I am locking the thread. If you think this is in error, feel free to contact me through my profile. Sorry.

It looks like it's the Xvid codec.

In the first image you supplied;

I can see xvid.ax. That looks like the Xvid Codec that's faulting.

Remove the codec and see if that helps. You may need to download another codec pack, and if so I suggest DivX Player and it's codecs. Its a free player.

To remove a codec, right click the My Computer icon and click Properties, then Hardware tab > Device Manager, Sound, video and game controllers, right click Video codecs, select Properties, then click the Properties tab and remove the Xvi codec.
