Playing avi video from external hardisk drive on HDTV

Currently I store my home videos (avi files) in an external Maxtor hardisk drive 320GB. i decided against burning to DVD as the process is lengthy. This external hardisk drive has a USB2.0 interface.
Is there any player (not a PC!) in the market that I can plug this external hardisk drive to and play my videos on a HD TV in good quality?

What is the best way to store home videos in avi format and be able to play them easily?

Appreciate your advice!

What kind of .avi files?

In reply to: Playing avi video from external hardisk drive on HDTV

I have a Philips player that plays divx on a jumpdrive. I havn't had a chance try using a harddrive yet. I might also add this unit will NOT play nero mpeg4.

Hi
As in understand avi is the uncompressed raw video data that you download from a mini DV tape. It's about 13GB for one hour of video.

Jumpdrive/thumbdrive works on player that has a USB port. However, my external hardisk is powered by an external power supply and it does not work on these conventional player.

Any suggestion?

I have just tried another external drive (works nicely).

Equipments:

DVD player = Philips DVP5960

External HDD. case =Cintre zdisc Cl-355SU2 (with sata and usb connections).

Harddrive = SATA

I am not sure what makes this thing work (the cintre box or the SATA drive).

sorry to say..it does not work. However, I have heard of other discussion about some external harddrive that is capable of doing this though.
