Playing a multimedia DVD on my CD drive

Mar 1, 2006 12:43AM PST

Why can't I get a multimedia DVD to play on my CD-RW drive? It opens the contents of a 3.5" SOFTWARE DVD-ROM easily, but the drive doesn't even detect the 5.25" multimedia DVD that I want to play.
I've tried this not only on my desktop's CD-RW drive, but also on my laptop's DVD-ROM/CD-RW drive. But the multimedia DVDs are never detected in either.

DVDs Read Before

In the past, I have been able to run several other DVDs in CD-RWs and CD-ROMs. And many of these were multi-media tutorial presentations (sometimes interactive) and various college eBooks (academic text).
But I've recently been wanting to play 2 different collections of TV recordings that I got this past Xmas that are both on 5.25" DVDs. But even when I launch my MS Win Media Player manually, the disks are neither detected on my desktop's (with Win2K Pro) CD-RW drive nor my laptop's (with WinXP Pro) combination DVD-ROM/CD-RW drive.
Since there have been several other DVDs (3.5" and 5.25") in the past that have run tutorials and various applications (such as drivers and utilities) properly, I am wondering why these 5.25" off-the-shelf TV recordings cannot even be detected.

Because they are not designed to be used on a CD drive.

Frankly, I'm surprised that ANY DVDs play on a CD drive. I certainly wouldn't expect all of them to do so.
