PLAYBACK STD LOCKED, PLAYBACK IS RESTRICTED Canon HV20

Dec 25, 2007 1:10PM PST

Hi All,
I have been given a project that has mixed HD and SD footage and a Canon HV20 camera which I have never used before, (without a manual of course). I imported some of the SD tapes into the project in both Final Cut Pro and iMovie but when I put a HD tape in I get a message on the camera that says "PLAYBACK STD LOCKED, PLAYBACK IS RESTRICTED", how do I unlock the playback standard, when I go to the menu on the camera I can get no options on playback Std.

Thank you in advance,

Oyseka

Got it!
I figured it out. Seems you have to disconnect the Firewire in order to make changes in the "Playback standard" menu.

I hope this may help others..."

Hi,
I am going to have to do the project as SD as there are clips from previous years that are SD plus the SD clips from this year and then the HD clips from this year. So what I am trying to do is bring in as SD all the excerpts from this years footage including the 20 HD tapes

is expected to be HD, then I would suggest importing the SD video all together, then saving them (or exporting) in a "full quality" mode as QuickTime, .AVI or MPEG4 files. Then, import the HD clips into the project... THEN, bring the QuickTime, .AVI or MPEG4 into the HD project. You can do this the other way, too - that is, start the project as SD, import all the SD video, then on a separate project, import the HD video and export that as "full quality"... and import the resulting QuickTime, .AVI or MPEG4 files into the SD "main project"...

Since we don't know what video editing application you are using, it is tough to recommend - but that is how I would do it with iMovie or FinalCut Pro on my Mac... This way, switching back and forth between formats and having to unplug/reconnect the Firewire cable is not needed.

The other method would be to have the Camcorder to the HD-to-SD conversion for you... That is in the manual, too...

playback std is locked playback is restricted canon hdv40

Hey I saw your post... we are having the same problem...with our canon hdv40 vixia... we have been recording both on std and hd... keeping hd & std tapes separate... I do not find a set up for playback... I find a std/or hd choices in the camera setting but in playback settings... it just shows rec/in set up... and dv rec mode is either sp or lp or audio ... How to set playback to standard / hd ? I have been just changing the camera set up (both connected/ disconnected from firewire)

Ideas?
