Question

Plasma TV will no longer power on

Jul 24, 2015 12:35PM PDT

So I have a plasma TV (PN60E7000FFXZA ) that I obtained new in February 2013 (manufactured late 2012). About a month ago it randomly just shut off one evening. I unplugged it for a few minutes, and tried turning it on and it powered up OK. Maybe a day or two later the same thing happened. Over the course of several days it would happen randomly....sometimes powering back up after a few minutes, other times after a few hours. I contacted Samsung and they said they have never heard of such a thing occurring, and offered the "check the plug your TV is plugged into" advice. Literally the next day it shut off, and nothing I could do would get it to power back on again. I contacted Samsung again and they tried to go through the same advice (like 5 basic things), which I verified I already did. They said they could recommend a service shop for me to contact and that I would have to pay for everything out of pocket. Doing some research online I saw all sorts of issues over the years from capacitors to power boards to everything in between. To my non-expert eye the capacitors look just fine, but I have no idea about resistors/fuses/boards overall.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I can try? If not, I have already contacted the local TV repair place for an inspection/estimate next week.

For a couple thousand dollar TV to last just a shade over 2 years is pitiful in my opinion. For my next purchase I certainly will not be going with a Samsung, since I also bought a LED TV (UN46F7100AFXZA) in 2013 and brand new out of the box it would not connect via WiFi. Samsung did send a technician to troubleshoot it, and when they couldn't figure it out (after replacing several components), Samsung basically said that it must be my problem. Despite the fact their technician said this wasn't the case, that the router was literally 2 feet away from the TV, and every single other device in the house could connect without issues from anywhere...so no interferences. So I connected via hardwire for a few months, then miraculously following a software update the WiFi connection started working. I could tolerate that slap in the face, but now with this second TV giving issues at such a short life, I have lost all confidence in Samsung.

One thing I forgot to mention....when it was originally shutting down (but eventually would turn back on), the status light would flash 10 times in groupings of 2 blinks. After the last shut down, the status light does not illuminate at all since I can not get the TV to do/respond to anything. So not sure if that helps give a better idea what might be going on currently.

Answer
I'll write a little on WiFi

Samsung devices seem to be less forgiving on WiFi. I've lost track of WiFi issues and have posted a little too much about it. For example WPA may do as you wrote and WPA2 clears it up.

But if you try TKIP it may fail. AES seems to work. Now this will royally upset those that point out that other things work fine. It's no PC and it shows. It's a device and folk have a very rough time accepting that it's not as nimble as other things. Distance seems to be up to 20 feet on some sets and then troubles are reported.

As to the failure, hope you kept your transaction numbers so you can escalate the claims.

Back to WiFi. There are some that feel it's time for a redo on wireless networking. Why would we ask everyone to be a network engineer?

Appreciate your input. As for the WiFi, I don't doubt there is much more to it than I am knowledgeable of. But when the technician who deals with this daily comes and makes countless adjustments and configuration changes and component changes, and moves things from 6 inches to 15 feet, and not a thing has an impact, then I feel all reasonable options have been explored. And to have it fix itself months later just from a software update...all very sketchy.

I have kept all the details of my contact with Samsung, but doubt it will lead anywhere since I am "out of warranty". It just means I will never purchase Samsung again. Due to the lack of responses, I am not optimistic there is an easy fix...so will drop it off at the TV repair center tomorrow to see what their thoughts are.

When it fails with what I know to work from experience....

It's time for board changes.
