Planning to vacation in California?

Feb 25, 2004 5:30AM PST

Bring money. Gas prices are now at $2.19 a gallon here in San Diego for unleaded regular and predicted to go over $3 by the summer. The reason given is our "special formula" clean fuel that can only be manufactured at a limited number of refineries. On the other hand - there will probably be a lot of good deals on SUV's. Since Arnold has a fleet of 9 Hummers maybe he will take some action.

Hello Mo
Feb 25, 2004 6:55AM PST

I know prices in England and other European countries are higher than the US but is the price the same for the entire country? Right now Ohio pays about $1.60 according to a tourist interviewed yesterday. Typically California, and especially San Diego county pays inflated prices in regards to the rest of the country. They blame the higher cost in this county on "Transportation" costs but we get our gasoline via pipeline. Phoenix Arizona has theirs trucked in from the same outlets and there prices are significantly lower. Given Californians love of their cars we're getting burned. If you ever visit I'd be happy to chauffer you around - wouldn't want you getting on the Freeway in the wrong lane Silly

Hello Patrick - re prices in the UK ...
Feb 25, 2004 7:42AM PST

Our demographic distribution is probably very different from the US. So, there are those (most) who live fairly close together and a few in remote districts, and those few inevitably pay more. Those "close together" buy from a choice of perhaps 5 suppliers.

Competition then comes into play. The garages have to charge the same price effectively, because the next one is not too far down the road. The technicalities of how this effective equilibrium is arrived at within economics and within the law (since cartels are illegal) is a different question.

Essentially, the short answer to your question as to whether petrol is the same price everywhere is: Yes, unless you are in a remote area.

PS Chauffeur - Yeah! Wrong lane - Yeah! ooops

I grew up in South Jersey (Exit 3 on the Turnpike) - I guess I shouldn't have left.

That's one thing NJ has always had going for it -- some of the lowest gas prices in the country because of very low taxes on fuel.

Yes, NJ does have a lot going for them. I had the pleasure of doing Business with Corporations in Lakewood and Teaneck. Very friendly and nice people.

If you're really good at gold you could hit Lakewood from my house with long tee shot. OK, really long. It's a very interesting city. They're revitalizing the downtown. They restored the theater. Diverse population.

Then you must be aware of the Coburn Corp. one of the largest manufacturers of Roll & Sheet Plastics.
