It's been a couple of weeks so to refresh your memory

"After reading through this thread...
I wonder (since you are able to post) if your comment -
When I click a hyperlink from within a web page, i.e. a link to pbase from within the Nikon Talk forum, all I get is a medium sized transparent frame, the clicked on URL does not show in the address bar of the resulting frame. is accurate or if you mean JUST THAT SPECIFIC HYPERLINK."

"If so a link to the page it is on would help. Failing that, what shows in the browser's status bar at the bottom of the window when you hover the cursor over that specific link?"

"HINT - Javascript links will often fail if the user tries to open the link in a new window, or even worse if you dont have javascript it wont work at all"

My comment was refering to all links from the Nikon Talk forum although failure occurs in other websites but not all.

When I hover over any of the links such as(http://www.pbase.com/johndig/arizona) what shows in the status bar is "shortcut to arizona at www.pbase.com"

I know nothing about javascript . . . I have seen something about it on my computer. Can you elaborate?

Thanks, Ron

Ron, are you aware that if
Jun 3, 2005 7:00AM PDT

you had posted this in your original thread, it would have percolated to the top of the first page from wherever it had been. Additionally, if Ed had subscribed to the thread, he would have received an email notice of your reply.

Just advising how to take benefit of forum features.

I hope Ed finds your new post.

How about giving us an ACTUAL LINK to the specific page on those Nikon Talk forums where we can see if we can determine the likely cause?

My saying that "When I move the lever to the left I go left faster than when I go right" does say exactly what is happening but it doesn't help unless you have been informed that the "lever" is actually called a cyclic and it is located in a specific helicopter (some foreign models are reversed).

So, the URL of the forum page you see that link on is ...?

All right...

I see nothing on that page that would cause the status bar to read "shortcut to arizona at www.pbase.com" rather than simply showing the URL.

If your browser is Internet Explorer however and you have placed a check in the checkbox for "Show friendly URLs" on the Advanced settings tab oth the Internet Options you will definitely get that referece to a shortcut.

I do note however that the page you provided a URL for noted specifically that If you're not seeing any messages listed in the above box or can't see thread lists on the message page then you either have Javascript disabled or are using 'not so smart' ad blocking software.

What possible ad blocker or even popup blocker and spyware blocker are you using and which browser. It could also be something in your specific browser settings.

Do tell us as much as you can (browser, OS, browser helpers, dial-up or broadband, opening in new window or not ("transparent frame" is a possible indication of that), etc.). It is easier to comment on the flower if the picture shown includes the whole flower rather than the assembly of a mosaic where each piece must be asked for.

Have you tried using a different browser?

We're getting there!!

I downloaded Netscape 8 and clicking on a link works as it should within that browser. So . . . doesn't that tell us that something in Internet Explorer is ticked/not ticked incorrectly?

I use Ad-Aware SE ad blocker and Spybot spyware blocker and as noted above, Internet Explorer browser with no helper that I'm aware of. I am a sub-sub-sub techie so I try to not fix it if it ain't broke, however I could have ticked/unticked something inadvertently. I do see messages listed as well as thread lists in the DPreview forum, so Javascript must be enabled (I don't know how nor where to enable/disable it)

I am using Windows ME, 1.6g CPU, 512 RAM, 40g HD with 20g free. Couldn't find ''opening in new window'' settings, consequently I don't know how it's ticked.

Yes, I agree that likely you have altered ...

a setting.

Open MSIE then click the Tools Menu then select Internet Options at the bottom of the list.

On the Security tab click once on each of the four and then click on the Restore Defaults (for each while highlighted.

Now go through the other tabs and restore default settings.

Now check to see how it is working ONLY ON THAT NICON SITE!

If it is working properly now go to this link and follow the instructions CAREFULLY:

Didn't work, as I fill my trash can with hair . . .

followed your instructions explicitly.

I think I should remind you that the problem is not restricted to the Nikon site e.g. When I click on the link you provided in your last message, it doesn't work.

I really would like to solve this dilemma, but if you are tired of it I understand. Don't want to impose on you.

Regarding my link...
Jun 6, 2005 8:23AM PDT

if clicking on it doesn't work try copying it and pasting it into your address bar and see what happens.

These are ALL clues but precise feedback is important. Exactly what does happen when you click on that link and does it happen in both Netscape and MSIE?

If only in MSIE try opening your Windows Conterol Panel and then opening the Add/Remove programs applet. Now locate Internet Explorer and click it to remove it. You will get anothetr message about reinstalling or repairing--choose to repair.

When I copy and paste your link . . .

or any other link, it works.

When I click on a link, yours included, I get a new IE window, as if it's going to the link except the link's address does not show in the address bar. The cursor changes to a boiling beaker which continues to boil. The new window can be moved and actually captures the portion of the original window that is surrounded by the frame of the new window.

The above does not happen with Netscape nor Oprea which I tried today.

Repaired IE . . . did not solve the problem.

More to try...
Jun 7, 2005 4:36AM PDT

but read CAREFULLY then follow STEP BY STEP. I am assuming that you are in fact using the latest MSIE 6 SP1 for Windows ME.

1. Quit all programs that are running.
2. Click Start, and then click Run.
3. Type regsvr32 urlmon.dll, and then click OK.
4. When you receive the "DllRegisterServer in urlmon.dll succeeded" message, click OK.

If this does not resolve the problem, repeat steps 2 through 4 for each of the following files (in step 3, replace Urlmon.dll with each of the file names below):
? Shdocvw.dll
? Msjava.dll
? Actxprxy.dll
? Oleaut32.dll
? Mshtml.dll
? Browseui.dll
? Shell32.dll

Didn't work but new info . . .
Jun 7, 2005 1:08PM PDT

couldn't remember the url of the MS Update page so from within Windows ME I went to MS Help to get it. When I clicked on the "Windows Update" link I got the same result that I've been getting from within IE.

Does this help? Hope so.
