Picking a Camera... Never such a difficult choice

Mar 24, 2005 10:12AM PST

Hey all. I need help. I'm usually good at picking a camera but I'm having issues picking this camera for myself.

I'm a college student and picking a camera on a shoestring budget. I have a 5.1mp camera that is an SLR but I can't bring that huge camera with me as I backpack through Europe. I need an ultracompact to take pictures of all those buildings I'm going to be seeing but I will also have a large Photoshop assignment I have to do while in Europe.

There in lines the issue. Should I go with better zoom, better image quality or better res as "all of the above" doesn't match my price point. Yes, I know there is little diference between 3.2 and 4mp but I *may* be manipulating these images.

I am trying to pick between:

~ Casio Exilim EX-Z40 (4mp, 3x/4x zoom, not-the-best image quality, more expensive than I really wanted Sad)

~ Canon Powershot SD10 (4mp, 5.7x optical zoom Sad , good image quality)

~ Konica DImage XG (3.2mp Sad , 3x/4x zoom)

Any opinions?

Pick A Camera

Since you have a SLR camera, you have the knowledge to use a camera with manual controls.

None of the ultra small cameras have manual controls.

The new Canon A510 is 3meg and has 4X zoom.
It has manual controls, and sells for $199.

If you want more megapixels the A520 is 4 megapixels and costs about $50 more.

Bulky?

It looks a little bulky to place in a pocket though. I like what it offers but I need something that can just slip in my pocket.
