Photoshop contest!

Because you guys love making us look silly, I'm starting a Photoshop contest on the Flickr group:

http://www.flickr.com/groups/buzzoutloud/

There are already a few great examples up there, by SimonTemplar and AndyInTN. Go to town (but you know...keep it decent)

Where is the mowing lawn pic?
Feb 14, 2006 3:38PM PST

Tom said on the podcast that he added a picture of him mowing the lawn. Was that just a joke? Anyway..can't find it!

Happy

Let me know where it is, or If I just don't get it...

my lame attempt
Feb 18, 2006 10:25AM PST

Here's my lame attempt at a movie poster featuring our favorite podcasters.

I hope I uploaded it correctly. This web 2.0 stuff is a real challenge to me. I really didn't think I'd find technology challenging till I got to be in my 60s or older, but ever since I turned 40 I'm starting to feel really old when it comes to anything new and confusing (RSS, CSS, creating playlists for my mp3 player, etc. -- it's a wonder I can download this podcast, when you think about it.

Anyway, don't be too harsh on me! It was fun to make this, though I kept switching them around, wasn't sure who should be Harry . . .

. . . I cheated. I didn't use Photoshop, I used Paint Shop Pro.

Don't feel bad
Feb 18, 2006 1:47PM PST

I'm going to be 32 in just over a week, and I don't even know much of anything about this web 2.0 stuff. I don't even have a Flickr account.

I'm putting Photoshop on my computer right now so I can have a crack at this contest. Once I do that and make my lame attempt, I have absolutely no idea how to submit it...

it's not that hard
Feb 19, 2006 5:01AM PST

Thanks! I didn't have a Flickr account till last night, either, but it looks like a good way to share photos with family and friends. If you have a Yahoo account, it's easy to sign up for Flickr since they're affiliated somehow, apparently. First, you create your own ID on Flickr, then upload the photo, and also go to the Buzz Out Loud group and join it. Then click on your photo and you'll get a page with a bunch of options, one of which is "send to group" or something like that. Since you'll only be a member of the one group, you just choose that one and poof! it's done.

Somehow this web 2.0 stuff isn't very intuitive for me, my brain is too old I guess. I mean, I figured out how to upload the photo, but I just know I'm never going to use this technology to it's full potential. Oh well.

'Twasnt hard at all. I've signed up for my Flickr account, and have joined the the elite of the BOL group. Yay! Happy

a further explanation
Feb 19, 2006 5:15AM PST

After I made this I thought about it some more and realized I probably should explain why I put the heads where I did.

If you're familiar with the Harry Potter stories, you'll realize that I've changed the gender of all three of our podcast personalities. This is not at all meant to be a comment on gender or sexuality. I was forced to change at least one person, because the trio on the HP movies is 2 males and one female, and the BOL trio is two females and one male. First, I thought I'd put Tom in the middle, on Harry's body -- after all, Tom does the teases and his voice is heard first. But I didn't like Veronica as Hermione, so I started thinking about personalities. Harry is truly the one in charge, but he's also very humble about it and doesn't draw attention to himself. Just like Vernonica -- as producer, she's sort of in charge in an understated way. So I put her head on Harry. I decided that, of all 3 of the BOL talents, Molly is the one who provides the most comic relief, which is also one of Ron's central role. So, Molly's head on Ron's body was a pretty easy conclusion. Also, I thought Tom on Hermione's body fits, because Tom is very smart and knows a lot of technical stuff -- it's hard to tell if he knows more than Molly and Veronica, but sometimes it seems that way, so I thought it would fit to have Tom on Hermione's body. They're all dressed pretty neutrally in the picture, anyway.

So, it was all in fun and not meant to be strange or anything. I hope this explains it. Happy

One of the best so far
Feb 19, 2006 5:30AM PST

Nice integration, jed. Maybe just pull just a touch of red out of the hand holding the gun to better match Tom's skin tone in the poster and it will be dead on for my eye. Love how you smooth-toned their photos a bit to make it look like poster art. Also nice touch with the fold crease across his face.

And another thing
Feb 19, 2006 5:35AM PST

Might also be fun to see the face of a Sony exec replacing Herve Villechaize or one of the other guys in the poster and the letters "DRM" on the side of the Golden Gun pointing at Molly. Happy

Why are t-shirts such a big motivator???
Feb 26, 2006 5:59AM PST

I couldn't find a good high res picture of all three of you, so I used this one of just Tom and Molly. At first I felt bad because Veronica isn't in it, but then I realized that she is!!

Check it out!

Up the ante
Feb 26, 2006 6:27AM PST

Since I already have a T-shirt, I'm not going to enter and kick all your arses (JUST KIDDING Happy !!) But I think maybe BOL needs to up the ante a bit for those who thought about entering but gave up.

I know that some of the entires I've seen here already are really good. So I would say to myself "enh, I'm not going to enter because he'll probably win it."

So I'm thinking maybe they need to give a T-shirt to the top 2 or 3 best picks so it keeps people trying. Or maybe a cool first prize, second prize and third prize with the T-shirt being one of them.

I'm sure they're just loving me for suggesting this Wink
