General discussion

photo storage & editing in a "cloud"

Is there a program (preferably free) where I can store my photos and edit them from any computer? I have access to several computers at different times and would like to download my photos to any of them and be able to work on them at whichever computer I am using.

Edit in what way?

As long as you have access to your photos from any computer, then you can download them to the computer you're working on.

But what do you mean by Edit? And which OS will you be using? For example, if you are using Windows and want to do simple cropping, Windows already has Paint installed for free. In Vista and Win 7 the Paint application has more editing options than previous Windows OSes.

For more detailed editing, then the computer you are using at the time will need specific software installed, and that is up to the owners' of the computers you are using.

I evidently mis-spoke.

1- I have acess to various computers. They are either PCs or Macs.
2- These computers do not have access to each other.
3- I would like to store my photos in a "cloud" or website so that I could then access the photos from any computer and edit them using an on-line editing program (like GIMP or Picasa)
Or is this possible in any way?
Right now, I am using an external hard drive to carry my photos, and using whatever editing program is available on the various computers.
Thanks for your time and attention.

Sure, entirely possible

If all computers have access to the internet, then there are many image hosting sites available.

A couple that come to mind are ImageShack and Photobucket. They each let you register an account and you can upload images to them. Ohh, and not to forget Flickr.

I am unaware if any of them have editing options, and the only "Image hosting and editing" site I could find in Google was http://www.drpic.com/ but I don't know anything about that.

But I still think it is more preferable to access your image online with any computer, then "Download it", edit it as you wish with the tools you already have, then upload it again. Downloading takes seconds, uploading a little longer maybe.

Hope that helps.
