photo icons on desktop

by marla9 / March 22, 2006 3:59 PM PST

I have windows XP with the latest update.
I have created shortcuts for some photos. What shows on the desktop are symbols. I want thumbnails of my photos instead. Right clicking on the symbol and then on "properties" does not give me the option to change anything except which program will open the file. Is there a way to change these symbols to thumbnails? How do I do it? Thanks for any suggestions. I really appreciate you computer-wise people.

Hi Marla - there is a way but it is roundabout and rather complicated. You have to change your photos - suitably reduced - to icons and then transfer the icons to the desktop. There are some programs that will let you do it, I found the best was Advanced Batch Converter (or ABC for short). You get 30 days free trial and then have to pay if you continue using it. Hope this helps - Amos.

Several months ago I was in the same place as you are now. Warning! Stop reading here if you have an addictive personality.

As another poster indicated you need a software program which will allow you to create icons from your images. Here is one put out by Stardock.
Take a look at all the products that they offer. Then go to the following site to see literally thousands of free skins for your log in page, your wallpaper, your icons, widgets, task bar, menus, and stuff you had never even thought could be shown on a computer.

I begin by making some simple icons out of pictures of candy that I downloaded. That was so much fun that I "graduated" to changing the entire look of my desktop. My icons move when you touch them, I have various semi transparent mini windows open that show me the weather and other items, my cursor has a whole new look, my log in page is absolutely gorgeous, and on and on. Like I said above, visit and you will never look back. Have fun.
