Question

Phone network

My smart phone is on a 3G package. The space [beside the signal strength] sometimes shows "3G", sometimes "E" and sometimes "H".... What do these letters mean ? TIA.

Surprising little.

Even 4G is marketing hoopla if you do more research. Forget all that and see how it works in your location. That is, where the rubber meets the road.

I have to assume.....

.....that you are either using At&t or Sprint. The letters represent the data connection speed.

From the slowest to the fastest: E=Edge, 3G=3rd Generation, H=HSDPA (commonly called 4G).

If faster data networks are not available (or overloaded) the phone simply connects to a slower data network.

The phone....

....will try to connect to the fastest data network available by default, it will fallback to a slower connection if a faster network is unavailable by design.
