Just keep in mind, Virgin uses the Sprint (or Verizon) network so while they may not have been around for several years, Sprint certainly has.

Our teens have had good luck with Virgin Mobile, however we are in a major metropolitan area where Sprint's service is good (Virgin Mobile uses Sprint's network).

Why do you say that, Motorola? If they're on the Sprint network, how bad can they be?

For pay-as-you-go, Virgin's probably as good as any other. Here's some company info:

(And, in the future, google or wikipedia is a more efficient way to find basic info than in here Wink )

ditto what everyone else said about the MVNO (service), but where you asking about the handsets themselves? Because Virgin doesn't make their own phones, they buy from the OEM (or buy refurbished) like everyone else. So you wouldn't necessarily be sacrificing in quality of the cell phones, unless their selection was just really poor.

apparently...

Apparently, and according to madeformotorola, the Virgin selection IS pretty limited. Not sure what this would be the case, but apparently they only offer very basic stuff.

as of recently, their selection has been somthing like 5 different devices and those devices were retired from other carriers anywhere from 3 to 6 months ago. They also severly limit their content so downloading games isn't going to happen with virgin. (darn it richard branson!)
