Philosophical Thought

by duckman / March 3, 2005 10:17 PM PST

As I was mixing the waffle batter this morning, the bottle cap from my beer fell to the floor and when I bent over to pick it up, I clocked my head on the cabinet door that was open. When I came to, the dog was licking the batter off of my face and I had this thought,? If a person cannot read, write, speak or understand a language, in what way does that person think and communicate to him/herself??

You and I read, write and speak in english. We also think in english as a result. What of an individual that has no language though? How do they think and reason without language? OTOH, maybe duck had something else in mind...

would have their own language. It may be severely limited, but it will be there. This limited language set is developmentally crippling. Building an substantial intellect requires both cognitive skills and language. They build upon each other. Refer to Helen Keller at the pump.

That sometimes happens, Duckman...

Duckman, unfortunately that sometimes happens. It's called a stroke. Many victims of one "learn" how to communicate again. The exact process of how they manage to learn to do so is not totally known, but somehow it seems to happen, fortunately.

But unfortunately, duckman...

But unfortunately, duckman, in many cases the portion of the brain that stored that ability/knowledge is "dead". Things like how to read a clock, speak, do math, etc. can be re-learned. As I said, the exact process by which this happens is not totally known, but it does happen.
