Do they challenge our own minds or just intimidate us by their seeming wisdom and use of language? Do they make the world better or worse? Do they interpret history correctly and will they write ours accurately? After all, most of what we read of the past that we use to make judgments of it comes from these people. As well, the learned class isn't always prone to be kind. It's been said the 'pen is mightier than the sword'. Remember that they were the advisers to kings and other leaders. Did they shape history? How well did they do? Might they actually be partly responsible for wars and warlike conflicts? What respect, if any, is due to them that's reserved for them alone?
As well, of what practical value is the "intellectual"? Challenge one such to assist you in painting your living room....if he will condescend to do so. I am willing to bet that, as he opines on the best color choice, you can have the job completed yourself. Who needs 'em? ![]()
