Phillips SPD5210CC 80 gig external HDD unrecognised

I have a HP pavilion ze4300 with windows xp. I bought the phillips SPD5210CC 80 gig external HDD a month ago and haven't any problems until a few days ago.

The computer does not recognise the HDD anymore, the HDD is connected via usb 4 port hub. I recently downloaded new windows update, could that be the problem? When i go to disk management, it does not appear.

However, the good news is that i know the HDD is still alive because when i connect it straight to the laptop via the usb ports at the back,it is recognised and works.

but why won't it work like it used to? I haven't changed anything apart from windows update.

please help, any advice, suggestions are appreciated.

thanks very much,

Try another hub.

While the hub may work on some parts, you have proven it not to work for your drive. This is not the first time I've seen this. Annoying and some owners spend months trying to find a fix.

Sorry. I was trying to spare you.

In reply to: hub did work with HDD

I've seen this before and the owners do all sorts of work to save the hub. They also claimed it worked before. They'll reload the OS, hunt for drivers and blame everyone for the issue.

I don't have the luxury of that much time so I just try a new USB 2.0 hub.

I hope you get what I'm saying here.
