Maybe it's normal for this model to become hot (it looks like a gaming PC, with its 1 GB video card). Maybe something is wrong. If you had only one year of warranty all you can do yourself (probably):
- check fans
- clean fans
- check cooling of the CPU, if necessary refresh the heat paste
- check cooling of the PSU, if necessary refresh the heat paste

Be sure you are using canned air on the vents every 1st of the month and the laptop is on a cooling pad. If not, HP is not a fav of mine since they do ship duds.

I'm not there to open it to replace heatsink compound. Here I do that first since cost is single digits. Fans are checked and it's spotless and clean when it goes back together. Not easy for first timers so be sure you know you are good at this. So many Youtubes today on this work.

After that, consider it not up for gaming?

Is the Lenovo y50 for the buck. The office set me up with the y510p with everything 2 years ago and last month fit a new keyboard and 512GB SSD. It feels better than new.

Here's a thing. I rarely get 4 years out of a laptop. Most of the time the technology moves it out but this time we were able to refresh it to make it current.
