First, I don't use Internet Explorer for normal surfing.. Instead, I use Firefox or some other hardened browser. Firefox prevents quite a few popups from loading automatically. (You can also set Internet Explorer to "High" in it's Internet security settings.)
Next, I use a HOSTS file which blocks your browser from visiting a number of advertising, spyware, and inappropriate sites.. See the link below:
How To Use A HOSTS File
The HOSTS file is easy to edit so if it prevents you from visiting a few of your favorites sites, you can easily edit it to enable that particular site.
Hope this helps.
I am operating windows Vista home basic, and I use Internet explorer using protected mode and with pop ups blocked. However during every internet session I get at least a dozen or so pop ups from websites usually relating to gambling, music downloads or car sales. Often the website address starts with 'CiD', but even eBay pops up too. Sometimes they open up a new tab and other times they are just in a pop up window. I have the latest AVG (free edition)and it has placed some trojan horses in the virus vault. Could these have infected the computer before AVG did the scan?
And is there an easy fix I can do now?
