Question

Personal finance & money management software suggestions

Jun 24, 2014 2:14AM PDT

I am so disappointed in the latest version of Quicken that I'm trying to find alternatives. (Quicken forces users to upgrade by ending support for downloading transactions from financial institutions.)

My primary objectives are:
1. Tracking expenditures - the ability to download from financial institutions is key
2. Budgeting - not only tracking actual spend against planned spend, but planning for the future as changes in expenses and income occur

I saw a mention of kmymoney but can't find a lot of information on it; Mint is out of the question because it's another Intuit product and doesn't know what I need.

What else is out there?

Look into "Gnu Cash". This is an open source (FREE), program; http://www.gnucash.org/ . I believe this may be exactly what you are looking for.

You should take a look at "You Need a Budget" aka (YNAB)

YNAB is a great piece of software for doing budgeting and tracking your expenses.

I make it a habit to keep a repeating task in my task manager (http://GTDNext.com) to update my budget and enter in expenses. it's really been a very good tool!

I'm using Microsoft Money for donkey's years, and have been quite satisfied with it.
