permission change was not fixed

I installed an application on my PC that oprated by Windows XP Pro. But when I open this application, there is an error' Error openning Key' every time and the application owner has sent me the instructions for solving this error by changing the permission in registry editor.
I followed as instructions and was very hopeful but the same error notices come up. When I review the permissions using regedit, I find it has defaulted back to my name and not "Everyone" as I had applied. Do you know how I can make this change stick? I'm sooooo close to getting this install done! Thanks you in advance for your assistance.
