Permanently Deleting Files

Mar 20, 2005 10:03AM PST

I have set my Internet Options to clear all cookies and temporary files upon exit of Mozilla Firefox. Why then do I find a list of Cookies and History still on my hard drive when I go into Norton SystemWorks/Web Tools/Advanced Cleanup? Some of these files are picture files from websites visited and MSN Messenger.

Also when the "Automatically Keep A History of My Conversations" option is NOT selected, are conversations backed up anywhere else on the hard drive as a temporary or permanent file that can be retrived and restored? How private is this means of communication? Thank you for your assistance.

Dalac, Firefox Doesn't Store Cookies In The Same Place...
Mar 20, 2005 11:41AM PST

....as Internet Explorer. Setting "Internet Options" in your Control Panel only deals with Internet Explorer/MSN Messenger Temporary Internet Files and History. Those items are stored in a different folder for Firefox. (Some are stored in the C\Documents and Settings\Yourusername\Application Data\Firefox\Profiles\default.x\Cache folder.) In order to set Firefox so it will remove cookies, you need to open Firefox, click on "Tools", choose "Options", then click on the "Privacy" tab on the left side. Now click on the + sign next to "Cookies" and change the "Keep Cookies" line. History is done much the same way.

I'm not familiar with the MSN Messenger settings you refer to.

Hope this helps.

For lazy types, (me), Firefox has two extensions you can install and add to a toolbar to manage cookies and clear the cache. Cookie culler, http://tinyurl.com/3s2w6 and "The Cleaner" for everything else including cookies, if you don't want to save any. http://tinyurl.com/6tzhy.
