There is a reason I like that idea.

The unibody design alone helps it take some abuse. But since we could put Windows on it in many ways, it's not a problem to run PC apps here.

I have a few (our office is porting apps) and they are not substitutes for laptops and PCs.

Answer
Worth asking your school

I'd rule out the iPad, nice light portable device but if you want to type up your notes and essays, the virtual keyboard is a disaster! Might be worth considering as your "transport vehicle" if you went for the iMac.

But your best plan is probably to ask your school - if they distribute PC applications, you might have problems installing them on a Mac Windows VM. If they only distribute data and notes, it doesn't make a deal of difference but watch out for PC proprietary formats. Down to personal preference, I guess.
