General discussion

Pentium 4 (3.0GHz,800FSB) or Athlon 64 3200+ (2.0GHz,600FSB)

My apologies if this question has been asked before, but.. If you had to choose between the Pentium 4 (3.0 GHz) or the Athlon 64 3200+ (2.0 GHz), which would you choose, and why? I am looking to get a new PC and am torn on which to pick.

Hello,

Good question to ask.

I would select the 64 bit, mainly because it is 64 bit and you are not dead-ended as far as future software upgrades and speed increases.

When AMD tells you that their CPU is a 3200+, they are implying that it is as fast as the 3.2ghz of 'other manufacturers', just because theirs is really 2.0ghz, doesnt mean it's slower. This is a 'judging a book by it's cover' instance.

AMD is VERY good at making their CPU's VERY efficient. Go with AMD for now, you WILL be very happy!

I'm going to purchase a whole new desktop computer soon. How important is it to have a processor with dual-core and 64 bits? Thanks!

Yes intel 6xx series, intel 5x1, Intel's extreme edition, intel p4 ee, intel pentium D supports 64-bit. Not yet that important for dual-core, but definitely 64-bit.
