Pentax S5i vs. Nikon 5200

Sep 24, 2004 10:41AM PDT

I have narrowed my camera choices down to the Pentax S5i (which I would be waiting for delivery in October) which is comparable in features and performance to the Pentax S4i and also the Nikon 5200. I like the pros and cons of both cameras. I like the size of the S5i (S4i) and I like the quick scene assistance modes in the Nikon 5200. Does anyone have experience with either one of the cameras? I get mixed reviews on both the cameras in the image quality criteria, but other than that both cameras seem to have a strong following. Thanks in advance for any assistance.

From looking at sample photos from the Nikon 5200 and the Pentax S4i, it appears that the image quality is just about the same.

I think you should check out the newly introduced Konica Minolta DiMAGE X50. It is about the physical size of the Pentax camera and the image quality appears to be better.

Hi. I tested the Pentax S4i (two of them) and found that the (on screen) resolution at 1MP was better than at 4MP! Also, there were "patchy" areas of blurriness. Design faults I believe. The size and ergonomics of the camera were superb.
I ended up buyin a Nikon 5200 from Ritz Camera. Generally a good camera, small, easy to use, fast response etc. But, as some of the reviews say, there is softness in the on-screen images (I have a 21" monitor). Post sharpening produces nice results, but is a nuisance if you have taken 1000 pictures on a trip!
I have found a $10 downloadable batch processing program (Digital Photo Fixer)which can sharpen a 1000 picture batch automatically, but it takes about 3hrs to do so. Results are good.
If I had it to do over, I would probably pick the Canon S500. I have compared a friend's S400 with my Coolpix 5200, and the S400 gives clearer on screen pictures, but slightly less saturated.
Hope this helps
