Pentagon weighs border deployment

May 12, 2006 11:32AM PDT

CNN) -- The Pentagon has been asked to draw up options for deploying military personnel to help secure the border with Mexico, CNN has learned.

President Bush could announce a plan as soon as next week, and Pentagon sources told CNN on Friday that National Guard troops might be involved.

Bush is scheduled to speak on immigration and border security at 8 p.m. Monday in an Oval Office address. (Full story)

Pentagon sources told CNN that one idea under consideration is to deploy several thousand additional National Guard troops in Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and California. The troops would assist civilian authorities by providing logistics, intelligence and surveillance, and would remain under the control of the governors of those four states. The National Guard already is participating in such roles in small numbers.

works for me and should mine the area wont make the trip to invade

Or maybe build a wall...
May 12, 2006 2:41PM PDT

But oh. That would take a lot of illegal immigrants to build.

Actually, a wall is under discussion, and a fence is already

present in many places. No illegal immigrants have been needed to build such things.

Isn't the US a terrible place? We have to build barriers to keep people out rather than in.

The NG is a great idea
May 12, 2006 5:14PM PDT

bill o'reilly has been pushing this for years. He'll be smiling next week. The NG should be deployed in the US which used to be their primary mission when required.
we must not hire illegals in our own lives since this has driven wages down and encourages outsourcing.
employers have to be investigated and stop their 'it's the feds job to find them' attitude. our taxes give too much for corporate welfare.
a brick and mortar wall is probably unnecessary and impractical for the entire border. strategic checkpoints, unmanned aerial surveillance, etc. Adding enforcement of existing laws is sufficient. I was at the berlin wall in 1980, entered east berlin at checkpoint charlie and talked to several citizens who chose a different economic system. the wall made people enemies who should have been friends. the psychological barrier is higher and longer than we could build. what ice should be doing is reviewing the tapes of the recent demonstrations. track the illegals and let them spend more time with their families. don't neglect the non-hispanics. enforcement should apply to all. how do we get rid of millions of illegals? one at a time.

I personally have no problem with the deployment of US troop
May 12, 2006 5:04PM PDT

s on the border, in fact, I think its a good idea.

I wonder if 2 barbed wire fences with a wet moat in between wouldn't make better sense than a wall. Less ugly for one thing, more transparent and therefore easier to see what's going on in Mexico The wet moat would collapse tunnels under the border unless they got into serious engineering, at which point their activity should be fairly obvious from the US side. There's probably enough communities along the border to funnel grey water, water used for washing up, laundry and hand washing, into a pipeline to soak the ground at the bottom of the Moat. It really only needs a foot of water or less standing in the Moat to make tunelling impossible, or at least very very unlikely.

See, that's how liberal I am.

?President Bush?to deploy several thousand additional National Guard troops in Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and California to secure the border with Mexico.?

The Pentagon plans to save money by reusing signage that was in storage and gathering dust in a U.S. Army warehouse.

The Pentagon has unveiled the design of new guard shacks that will be installed along U.S. ? Mexico Border as well as new uniforms that will be worn by the National Guard troops assigned to border security duty in Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and California.

deja vu for me. we can avoid the totalitarian aspect of the border. it should be 'user friendly' since we live in the 21st century

Not the 1st time our military assisted the Border Patrol.
May 13, 2006 1:24AM PDT

We had US Marines helping to guard against drug traffic, but not too long after a Marine killed an 18yr old Mexican American goat herder on the Big Bend Texas border, after being fired on in 1997, the Pentagon withdrew the Marines.

Hope this new batch of Nat. Guards are armed with live ammo & permission to defend themselves.

BTW......
May 13, 2006 1:41AM PDT

A civilian grand jury did not indict the Marine, who was with a 4 man surveillance team, returning a single M16 shot after receiving 2 rifle shots from the 18 yr old Esequiel Hernandez. It was reported that payments estimated to be up to $1.6 million was paid to the family.
