Pennies from Heaven...

by null. / November 16, 2004 5:30 AM PST
To describe Gene Sukie as "penny-wise and pound-foolish" would be seriously underestimating the man.

He has, after all, collected nearly 10,000pounds of pennies in his lifetime - the greatest feat of spare change collecting yet recorded.

Tuesday, it will all come to an end.

The retired glass-factory supervisor, 78, will cash in what remains of his record-setting collection of 1,407,550 pennies, worth $14,075.50, accumulated over 34 years.

Hi Don: Can you imagine what those pennies would have really been worth. Especially the 40,000 he cashed in, back in 1970. All the wheat cents it must of contained. Maybe a couple 55 double dies, 14D, 09svdb, ooooh this kills me thinking about that stash. It did'nt say if he went to a coin dealer, but if he just turned them in to a bank. ooooh no. He probably could have bought a house for her too, had he had them appraised.

Hi, Don,

Mr. Sukie sounds level-headed, dedicated, and sensible, and like someone I would like to know,

We used to save pennies for something special, but it seems they were sometimes spent on the unspecial. Happy

100 pennies still make a dollar. I have $40-odd worth of them. Several years ago it was announced there were 4 double-struck pennies, and would be worth $4000. I keep telling myself that I will one day go through my "treasure" to see if I have one. Happy

I remember when I, a child of 5 or 6 years, looked at my grandmothers collection of pennies. She had 2 or 3 5 gallon water bottles (Glass) full of pennies I wonder if she still has them or if she still collects them. she is now 80 years old and still works full time, I will ask her.
