General discussion

peculiar slowdown

Sep 4, 2005 3:12AM PDT

Hey guys,

I have been having severe slowdown on my computer lately. I know for a fact that it is prelevent with any web browser(i use firefox but tried my others), But any web page I click on takes about 5-15 seconds to load when it used to be near-instant.

My only major change is that I moved my computers location from a cable modem at home to the t3 network at school. No other people on my school network are having a similar problem.

Also, it may be that i'm just looking for system problems but it seems like all other applications are moving slightly slower also.

I've already run tech tool pro, onyx, changed my ethernet cable, and installed any sytem updates(for some reason i thought that might work). I am running OS X 10.4. I thought I would try and defrag the drive also(I don't have the CD for Tech tool Pro so I can't make an E drive), but any defrag tool online that could help me costs money I don't have.

Anyway, I think I said everything relevant. If you need more specificity just tell me, thanks.

So, what machine are you running 10.4 on?
Anything we should know? You recently installed something new?
How much RAM installed?
What happened to the TTP CD?
Are you far from home? Could you go back and see if it runs better with the cable at home? Doubtful, but who knows

System specs

Mac mini 1.25
516MB ram
I have no clue where the CD went off too. I didn't realize I needed it after it was initially installed.
And no, I can't go home. My lease ran out.

Unfortunately, without a utility CD to boot this machine from, there is not a lot you can do.
If the TTPro CD is missing, call MicroMat, explain the problem, give them the serial number and "maybe" they will supply you with a new CD. Probably for a fee.
Do NOT be tempted to use an old version of Symantec/Norton SystemWorks. You think you have problems now......
Download Onyx or Yasu and run their routines. Repair Disk Permissions
Do you still have any of the CD's that came with that machine. One in particular, the Apple Hardware Tester, should also be run.

Good luck

That was a silly, and difficult, thing to do. Given the number of locked items in the Application folder, I'm surprised the system actually let you do that without a fight. No wonder you cannot download anything, you have nothing to download with.
Before we can fully sympathize, we will need a little more information.
1. what machine are you running
2. what OS
3. Do you have the original disks
4. Do you have any recovery software on CD.
5. Did you actually empty the trash can after you moved the Applications folder to it?
The ability to "recognize" CD's is NOT a function of the OS, more a function of the firmware on the logic board. What indications do you get when you insert a bootable CD, restart and hold down the "C" key?
