PDF Problem

Feb 20, 2004 3:42AM PST

Hi everyone! I have the following problem:

When I try to open a PDF file I get this error message: "this action is only valid for products that are currently installed". The thing is that I installed the Adobre Pro 30 day trial, uninstalled it, and installed the regular Acrobat Reader. Well, know I get that message, but the funny thing is that if I choose "open with" - Acrobat Reader 6.0 the pdf opens without a problem. Any thoughts on how to solve this?

Thx very much for your time and cooperation.

Problem of file association ?
Next time you choose to open the PDF file via "Open With" Acrobat Reader 6,, check the box " Always open..." The "Pro" program is different from the "Reader" program, as far as file association is concerned.

Thanks for your help. I tried that, but the issue persists. It' like it doesn't "remember" to use the "Reader" when I tell it to do so. What else could I do?

Thx again for your time and help.

1 - Go to the document
2 - Right click on it and choose "open with"
3 - Click on "Choose Progran"
4 - Choose Acrobat Reader (highlighted it in blue)
5 - Check the "always use the selected program to open this kind of file"
6 - Click ok

*Doc opens fine, but whe I close it and try to double click on it to view it, I get the error message.

Please help, thx.

1. Somehow, but I don't know how, it would appear the anomaly is being either caused by Sharing or Privileges for some reason. Is there a Program.log file in the TEMP directory by any chance and does it give any leading information?

2. However, what is reflected for File Type when you check Folder Options for the PDF extension -- similar to, which I'm not sure what would be reflected:

<drive>: \ <path> \AcroRd32.exe" "%1"

You have to manually remove Adobe Acrobat. Go to http://www.adobe.com/support/products/acrobat.html and search on manually remove acrobat

Hone in your operating system and version of acrobat that you uninstalled; go to the manually remove section (most of the items start off with the standard removal).

Bill, how do I do this
Feb 23, 2004 9:00PM PST

Hi Bill, thx for your reply.

How do I check your suggestions on point 2 (I could not find what you asked on point 1 - I may be searching for it the wrong way though).

Thx again.

1. Please look and use the instructions in the section titled, Change the Default Action, in the article [Q320036] please.

2. When the System Properties (click to see an example screenshot) dialog box appears, click Environment Variables on the Advanced tab. Look under User variables for user name for the columns Variable and Value. The TMP and TEMP where the settings for environmental appears under these columns. Examples of valid settings are as follows:

TEMP = C:\WINDOWS\TEMP
=or=
TMP=C:\WINDOWS\TEMP

3. Start Windows Explorer, click the View, Options. Click the View tab, click Show hidden files and folders, and then click OK.

4. With Explorer open, look for the folder by the location listed in the User variables for user name box, #2 above. Hint: You could simply type the <drive:> \ <path> \ <the name of folder> on the Run line, and then press Enter.
