1. The reason that the PDF files do not open, by default, using Adobe is because they are associated with Preview. Are you sure it is Safari?
To correct this, find a PDF document that you wish to open and RIGHT click or Control + Click and choose Get Info. You will see that there is an option to Open with. Currently this is set to either Safari or Preview. Use the dropdown menu, on that line, to scroll through the list of applications until you find Adobe Acrobat. If you didn't find it, scroll to the very bottom of the menu, choose Other and navigate to where you have Adobe stored.
Choose it. Then, in the same area as you have just been working, there is a button that allows you to set the chosen program as the default for opening this type of file.
Click it and then close the window. Double click a PDF file and see what happens.
2. In the case of the ColorJet 3500, you MUST follow the manufacturers directions for networking this printer. It is kinda quirky and needs to be done exactly as they say.
Hope that helps

1. I have a macbook. When i open a pdf file like a journal paper it opens in the safari window itself. How do i make it open in adobe reader. I have installed Adobe reader 7.0.8. but it doesnt open up by default . Does it have anything to do with the intel thingy, is adobe is universal??
2. we have a HP colorjet 3550 in our lab. I am trying to network it. yes, it is a networkable printer..i have the IP address etc. So when i try to add the printer (everything is connected by the ethernet cable) what protocol should i use IPP or line printer daemon (LPD). i have tried both and then entered the IP address below (it says that the address is correct)....but still i am not able to print from my macbook.
next i tried installing the printer with the cd that came with the printer. it installs...but doesnt show up in the printer list. so i am back to sqaure one...not able to network the MB to the printer.
also just for records others in the lab are able to network to the printer both PC and the lab's pwerMacG5.
thanks for reading till the end!!
